Hi everyone,

I am 32+2 and baby in breach position at the moment also have been diagnosed with Gestational diabetes. What is the likely hood I will be able to give birth in a birthing centre?

Has anyone experienced baby turning into correct position at this stage? Really wanted drug free (except gas and air :-)) and no foreceps etc really pooing myself about C Section...

Hi,
My baby was breach at 36 weeks and they were going to attempt to turn her at 37 weeks if she hadn't turned herself. They did say that 80 to 90% will manage to turn themselves, otherwise they were going to do a c-sec at 39 weeks. Fortunately she turned herself. The advice I was given by other MN's was to go on all fours, sit/bounce on a birth ball and lean over the ball whilst kneeling on the floor, basically be as active as you can (I was a bit of a couch potato!) Something worked!
Sorry can't answer about the diabetes, but I'm sure someone else will.
Hope that helps and good luck.

It really depends on what your blood glucose is like. Technically you will be classed as a high risk pregnancy but if you are managing your GD well you might be able to.

As for the breech baby, one of my twins was often breech and flipped around every five minutes before she was born- and that was with another baby in there! I think it's too early to tell at the moment.

Oh thats great poohbearrules as I have just bought a birthing ball. I havent use it as yet but intend to use everynight afterwork! Its good to know she moved round so late on!
IceCubes blood sugar is all over the place sometimes at 4.3 and has went as high as 9.5 usually sits around 5.5 - 6.5 I am taking 500mg of metformin and have been for 3 days but it does not seem to have made any difference. I eat nothing with any more than about 6% of daily allowance of sugar i dont eat sweets chocolate etc but still not getting any better. Dr said that your liver produces sugar also so sometimes there is nothing that you can do to bring it down. I think that they will up my meds which really upsets me as I have taken no medication throughout my pregnancy inc paracetamol etc :(

5.5-6.5 isn't horrific so I would still push for what you want. Do you have any GD- related conditions like polyhydramnios? If not then I really don't see why you couldn't at least have the opportunity to attend the birthing unit, provided your consultant thinks you would be safe.

Not that I am aware of I meassure perfectly at the moment but they have not mentioned sizing scans or anything like that at the moment. TBH they havent given me very much information about GD and what to expect next I have MW tomorrow so will ask her some questions however she doesnt seem to know alot about alot... Hmm

With my GD, I had to see a diabetes nurse every two weeks. She checked my figures and advised of any changes that I would need to make. I guess if MW thinks you are measuring too large for dates you will get extra scans but you will probably have to be quite assertive about it because of all the cuts and staff shortages. I do think the MW should be seeing you more regularly too for urine checks etc.

Depends on your GD I should think, I had to have a hospital induction with insulin/glucose drip. Are you seeing the diabetes team at your hospital, what do they say?

strawberrypenguin · 11/07/2012 16:30

Should say I had insulin controlled GD which it doesn't sound like you do. I do know that where I am they pretty much insist on a hospital birth with GD incase baby needs fast help for funny sugar levels.
