Anything I can do to avoid gestational diabetes this time round?

I had a 10lb baby first time!!
Ouch as natural delivery too :/ this ment I couldn't walk or look after myself for ages after, I got an infection in my cut and ended up in hospital with two blood transfers to keep me here.

Needless to say I will doANYTHING to make sure that doesn't happen this time around, any way to avoid this?
I'm prettified and have always been of a natural delivery ever since as he got stuck and it was very scary especially for my first baby at 20 years old

Thank you xx

I'm not sure that you can actively avoid it but also just because you had is once doesn't mean you will again.

My mw did tell me to eat a good balanced diet though and avoid too much fruit juice, sugar and white carbs as this can help keep blood sugars lower.

I'm guessing as you had GD once already you'll be monitored carefully for it this time round. Remember you can always request an ELCS if you feel it necessary. I would talk through your concerns with your mw and see what they suggest.

AllIWant thank you I'll ask, my first appointment is in august which I think is maybe wrong as surly I should be seen by a doctor or nurse as soon as I test positive.
I would have thought I'd need folic acid asap?
I'm so out of touch with what happens next so many questions but I have to wait until I'm about 10 weeks to see a mid wife ?

You need folic acid right away - but you can buy it in any big supermarket/chemist. Go get some!!

With regard to the GD - I think you are quite likely to get it again if you've already had it... BUT knowing from the outset might be a bonus since you can watch your blood sugar right from the start..

I'm surprised they didn't induce you earlier TBH. My best friend had GD and they induced her two weeks early to ensure the baby didn't get too big.. Might be worth asking for a scan later in pregnancy to check the size??

And I think not seeing a midwife until 10weeks is the norm: indeed, that seems quite early. With DD I didn't see one until after my 12 week scan (so was almost 14 weeks by the time they organised anything)...Might be different if you're 'risky' though (due to the GD history). Can you call the hospital you'll be booked in at and ask/push?

Oh I don't mind waiting until 12 weeks thats fine but I'd only just clicked that I've not had any folic acid or had a chat with a nurse or gp :)
I'm trying to be good with my diet but I work funny shifts and so I miss breakfast and eat my lunch very late, bad habit I guess I need to re-dress now rather then later.
I want to see a nurse early to make sure I'm doing everything right too, it seems I've forgotten everything lol
I'm going to try to start walking and doing some light exercise to help with my weight gain too
xx
