Our dilema: We love the name Ilya (for a girl) but we already have a girl who we call Luie. If we have an Ilya, she might be called Illy. Are Luie and Illy too similar? Would we end up tongue tied and confused, and would people think it sounds weird to have such 'matching' names?

Honest opinions please!!! (But don't be too candid in case we go with it even against popular opinion!)

Leaving aside the issue of whether I like them (ahem), I don't think they're too similar.

I remember (from a book?) a pair of sisters called Illy and Lorly, but they were both short for things that were completely different (Eleanor and Rosemary I think).

If Luie is short for something that sounds really different from Ilya, I think you'd get away with similar nicknames, but if they were (eg) Ilya and Lulya you might have a problem.

I think you would get confused and they do sound similar! go for something totally different.

What do you like for a boy?

Astrophe · 02/03/2006 13:31

Boy is easy - I think there are so many lovely boy names and far fewer nice girls names! But I know others find the opposite. I kind of think its a boy anyway, but still need girl options up our sleeves.

i have an Isabelle, whom everyone calls Izzy, and my SIL has a Libby.
even though they dont sound that similar they both end up being called by eachothers names or lizzy or ibby!

Astrophe · 02/03/2006 13:45

And is it a problem? Do the girls themselves mind?

i think they are too similar, sorry

my dd1 is Melanie and she has a friend Emily, Melanie and Emily = total nightmare when said together (esp. when shrieked across the park)

if you are worrying about it now, it might be an annoyance when the baby comes along Smile

I'm afraid I have to agree - they do sound a bit too similar. I completely see where you're coming from though - we have 2 boys names picked out and are really struggling with girls!

So any sugestions then? :)

What about Alyona (Ukrainian name, pronounced with a short 'o', which is quite like Ilya but she would end up being called Ally which wouldn't clash with Luie),

If you like 'L' type names what about:

Helena, Lily, Gwendolen, Eleanor, Alyona (Clara, Felicity, Milly, Lydia, Alexandra, Leila, Olivia, Nilufar, Adela, Leonora, Clara, Alicia, Loveday, Lettie (Letitia), Lara, Lorna....

my baby is due in September and I need a girl or boys name with seven letters and a middle name that starts with the letter J, as our family all have seven letters in our name and we all have J's as a middle name. Any ideas or good baby name books to look in.
