My eye has been sore the past couple of days so ive been to the chemist this morning and he said it looked like a minor eye infection and was going to give me Brolene but i asked if it was ok in pregnancy and he got rather flustered and said i shouldn't use anything pharmaceutrical for any condition during pregnancy. Has anyone else used Brolene in pregnancy? Is it really unsafe or was the pharmacist being overcautious?
Thanks

He probably was being overcautious but rightly so as he doesnt have the evidence to say that it's definitely safe. The problem is that most pharma products aren't proven to be safe for pregnant women (because they haven't done the trial because it would be unethical) and there's a big difference between saying "we don't know of any ill effects" and "it's safe. Knock yourself out"

It probably would be fine, but I would just call your midwife to check.

I couldn't get anything from a pharmacy for use in pregnancy, I was told to see my GP sadly. Which is worth doing I suppose as your prescriptions are free Wink

If brolene is chloramphenicol (which I suspect it is) then you can't use it during pregnancy. I had a few weeks of persistent eye infections when I was about 20 weeks, I saw my GP and was prescribed fusidic acid, which is suitable. It's not available over the counter so you will need to see someone.

Thanks for your tips - DH picked some Brolene up yesterday which isn't chloramphenicol but i saw the nurse practitioner at my surgery today and she prescribed me chloramphenicol instead, however the leafler tht came with it, as well as all the google research, says it def should not be used in pregnancy. So confused! I'm thinking i'll use the Brolene as that seemed to be working and seems to have fewer bad instances in pregnancy than the chloramphenicol.Any opinions?
