Any medical doctors who can advise on Pseudomonas infection in pregnancy?

Posting here as well as in Chat for traffic....

I'm at 37+4 with DS2 and have recently been told that my MSU sample came back from the path lab as infected with Pseudomonas fluorescens. My background is in microbiology and so I know that's a weird bag to have (as the doctor confirmed).

They're retesting my urine to see if it was just a contaminant, but the thing is that I do have an infection down there (the peesticks show up bright pink, indicating infection) and it's itchy and uncomfortable. Not sure it's a UTI, could be vaginal (sorry for TMI).

I'm aware that if I do have this bug, treating it will be problematic as most of the effective antibiotics are contraindicated in pregnancy. However, I'm also concerned that I will infect my DS2 during birth and that he will end up in a bad way 'cos he's tiny and has low defences.

Are there any medics out there who can advise me on what's likely to happen next? Thanks for your time :)

I had pseudomonas too whilst pregnant and had to have injections twice a day for 3 days at the hospital but sorry I can't remember what the antibiotic was.

Thanks fatmummy. Did you have to have the injections near the end of pregnancy or was it early on? I'm a bit worried about infecting DS2 during labour and was hoping they could treat me before I'm due (although at 37+5 it's getting a bit close)!!

I was about 6 months I think (i had so many infections and an op so can't really remember!!)

If you give me a couple of days i'll see if I can find out what the antibiotic was Smile

Hi I found my notes and I had the intravenous antibiotic Gentamicine. The drug was administered in hospital over a three day period (I had 2 injections a day) and a test carried out after seven days to establish the result so you'd have enough time. The hospital microbiology department confirmed this was the best drug and my consultant was happy for me to have the treatment.

Hi, like you said it's a really funny bug which doesn't usually cause uti's but lives in water, so most likely to be a contaminant. If you have a vaginal infection it is really hard to get a clean urine sample, and even harder with a big bump! I usually take my samples after a shower, and it's important to pass the first urine into the toilet, then collect the mid stream urine. If it does grow again they will probably treat it and likely to be with intravenous antibiotics as there isn't usually an oral option that's safe in pregnancy. This bug doesn't usually cause problems for new babies. Brief - on phone, sorry!

hi everyone,
I'm 19 weeks pregnant and have got a letter from the hospital that they found the pseudomonas bacteria in my last urine culture (back in Dec and Jan) when I was about 12 weeks.
I have no symptoms as such but I understand its a bad bugto carry. The doctor suggested I can only have an IV drip for the antibiotic but i wasnt quite sure. On one hand i know its a bad bug to carry; so must get this treated . Whilst on the other hand since I dont have any symptoms, i feel going to the hospital for 3 days for such a strong antibiotic may only make me sicker.
Please can I have some advice on this? This is my second [regnancy and have had no such experience last time. Is there a risk to the unborn if I take this antibiotic or if not; what are the risks?
