Hi

I am currently 7w2d pg and am sooooo thirsy, it's almost like an unquenchable thirst which I get some days and have done on and off for a couple of weeks... Have already drunk a litre of water today (as well as 2 Brew Blush ) and I am still thirsty!

Is this normal?

Yes !!! An unquenchable thirst is a very common pregnancy symptom . I'm 23 weeks now and I still have it to a degree (sorry Grin) had it with pg1 too . U found I wanted mineral water rather than tap water so I bought a filter for the fridge rather the stocking up on ridiculously expensive water.

sarahpip · 06/07/2012 10:58

Yes, yes, yes, I am still thirstier than pre preg at 26 weeks. I find that the old fashioned lemonade and cider (.....of course, they haven't even seen an apple - so not being naughty...) flavoured ice lollies did the trick!

....Can't find an excuse for the cornettos and magnums though.

Spice17 · 06/07/2012 11:12

Yes me too at 27 weeks, though I think it can also be a symptom of diabetes so worth mentioning to MW?? I'm going to next time. Don't forget also very muggy, so no wonder we're all glugging away :)

Banjogurl · 06/07/2012 11:14

For about a week before I found out I was pregnant I drank an insane amount of orange juice, I couldn't get enough. Have been very thirsty throughout entire pregnancy, am 39 weeks + 4 days today and just enjoying a nice big glass of watered down apple juice. Yum. Have never enjoyed non-alcoholic drinks so much!!!

SwissArmyWife · 06/07/2012 11:20

I don't think I was ever without a pint of water next to me with my first, now 22 weeks with my second and the same. It's perfectly normal :)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 06/07/2012 11:21

Normal! At one point I think I was topping 3 litres of water a day Shock

randomimposter · 06/07/2012 11:22

Yes absolutely. Am now 26 weeks and it's relented a bit, but was really bad earlier on. I would have to have satsumas by bed for night time wakings!

mumnosbest · 06/07/2012 11:28

yes and it goes straight through. i was always worse before bed leading to broken sleep ---> good practise!

mrsbugsywugsy · 06/07/2012 11:29

me too, this was my first pregnancy symptom. i've found soda water is great if you feel queasy, the value stuff is only about 15p for a massive bottle.

SamraLee · 06/07/2012 12:43

As another poster mentioned it is a sign of diabetes, so you should mention it to your midwife to be on the safe side.

curlyLJ · 06/07/2012 16:30

Thanks for all the replies ladies. I was checked only recently for Diabetes, so I know it's not that. Must just be PG symptoms. I don't remember having this when I was PG with DD.

Am feeling constantly hungry now too! I am so bloated I already look how I did at 20w with my DD Blush and I just can't stop eating...

Oh thank goodness it's not just me. I have been so so thirsty too, especially craving fizzy water and this lovely peach iced tea that they sell in waitrose mmmm.

I've been worried about it being diabetes, so I will mention to the midwife when I see her, but I've been pg twice before and I'm pretty certain I was like this both of those times too.

I wonder what causes it?

kittysaysmiaow · 06/07/2012 16:38

Oh I'm so so thirsty too! I have two pints of water when I wake up in the morning.

Angelico · 06/07/2012 16:43

Ice lollies really help and water with ice. I went through a mad 'sparkling water' phase too.

It's actually good to be thirsty as you at least know to drink more - saw MW yesterday and she said a lot of pregnant ladies don't realise how much they need to drink and to actually drink more than you think you need, especially in hot, humid weather.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 06/07/2012 16:48

BradleyCooper your MW should test your wee for sugar at each appointment, which (I think) helps pick up diabetes?
I read you make a lot of extra blood during pregnancy, I can only think you need the extra fluid...

I went through a sparkling water phase too, so thirst quenching! Especially delicious with half a lemon squeezed in each pint :d

oikopolis · 06/07/2012 18:50

extreme thirst & falling asleep while watching telly at 8pm every night were my first symptoms, pre-BFP. It calmed down around 20 weeks or so. i don't think it's a symptom of diabetes until later in the pregnancy really -- i might be wrong but i think it's a benign thing early on. i've had my GD test and am totally fine on that front.

i think it's just the sheer amount of water needed for all that internal activity iyswim. you're building up your blood stores, amniotic fluid is starting to be produced, all sorts.

get your water bottle/flask out and carry water with you wherever you go, my worst nightmare was being stuck on the metro with no water to drink!!

Splinters · 06/07/2012 18:59

6+6 and very thirsty, all the time. I can't really go for more than about 20 minutes without a glass of water to sip from, preferably cold and fizzy. I must be drinking at least twice as much as I was before I got pg! Interestingly I'm not really weeing any more than I was before though, so it must all be going somewhere!
