Can anyone help, my baby books aren't great and I had to miss my antenatal classes :(

I have:
nursery furniture
nappies
sleepsuits
vests
too many clothes(!) grandparents have gone scatty!!
bath stuff
nappy rash stuff
bibs
socks
mitts

I will try to breastfeed for a time - so what will i need for that? Boobs? ;)

I assume you hav carseat, pushchair/sling Grin
A coat or 2 for baby
muslin cloths for mopping up vomit
breast pads

Indith · 05/07/2012 13:50

and lansinoh for sore nipples.

don't use the bath stuff, babies just need water.

Pascha · 05/07/2012 13:53

Cake.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 05/07/2012 13:55

You'll need breast pads. I love lansinoh one's but I'm very leaky, and non of the supermarket own brands hold my jet stream of milk Blush. Same problem with reusable breastpads. But you won't know until you start bf what your leakiness is like.

Lansinoh cream is also very very good. I use it after every time I feed in the early days.

To be honest, you don't need an awful lot more than you have mentioned, and the shops will still be open once your LO arrives, so you can buy stuff then and you don't even have to go out, you can shop online for almost everything.

I personally went a bit mad when I was PG with my DD and bought loads of stuff I didn't need and was adamant that the nursery had to be ready, when in all honesty she was in with us for 5.5 months and she didn't give a hoot what her room looked like Grin

The only things I can think of that you haven't mentioned are:

  • sheets/blankets - or sleeping bags if you are going to use them (which I thoroughly recommend!)
  • a breastfeeding pillow/cushion
  • muslins - you simply cannot have too many of these
  • wipes - i used washable ones which were fab!

Thanks!
Yep have pram and a car set - just need the base now (I'm getting forgetful!)

I need sheets - any recommendations? My mum bought me a sleeping bag but it looks HUGE for a wee bubba?

Will get some muslins (keep writing muslims! Bet they wouldn't like to mop up the things the muslins will see!)

Wipes, yes can never have too much!

Yes we do need a coat in this climate eh? rain rain rain!!!

Agree with the bath things. They are supposed to be washed only with water as newborn. I top and tail a lot in the early days with flannels and cotton wool.

You also don't need sudocrem after every nappy change with the new disposables. They are very very dry. If they have nappy rash, metanium is much much better for clearing it.

JenJen84 · 05/07/2012 14:01

Its bepanthen I bought, just thought it was worth having in the cupboard (was 1/2 price too!)

Johnsons have scammed me, the adverts!!! Ok just water til she's bigger then!

If your baby is very small, like my DD, then the grobags will be too bag. I think thye need to be 8lbs to go into them. You can try a swaddle blanket like gro-swaddle until they can go into a sleeping bag.

DD can't use blankets at all as she kicks them all out within a minute of me tucking her in. (I ordered them online asap after failure with blankets after a few days).

strawberrypenguin · 05/07/2012 14:05

You don't necessarily need one but I found a baby bouncing chair (not sure if that's what they are called Blush but I'm sure you can track it down) really useful. You can pop them down all strapped in and safe when you need to do something. I miss mine now DS is too big for it.

In terms of bedding try to make sure you have a stretchy blanket that you can use to swaddle if your LO likes it.

JenJen84 · 05/07/2012 14:15

Oh yes those look quite entertaining and useful, thanks!

Cheekychops84 · 05/07/2012 14:21

Yes I wud deff say bouncy chair or sling everytime I needed to do something/ answer door go loo etc I wud jus pop them in that ! Altho they dnt roll wen they are tiny don't like leaving them on the sofa or floor .

Cheekychops84 · 05/07/2012 14:21

Meant swing but u may also want a sling ? Grin

JenJen84 · 05/07/2012 14:23

If you are going to feed with a bottle even once a day as mentioned in pp then you need sterilising equipment. I had an electric one for ds1 and micro for ds2 I much prefer the micro one.

Florin · 05/07/2012 15:12

My ds is 2 weeks tomorrow the one thing we didn't buy enough of is muslins. We use several a day for mopping up sick lining the changing mat with at night so it's not so cold, we use one in his pram tucked round mattress to catch any sick and if hot use one as a sheet, impromptu sun shade, ds also likes to hang on to one plus lots of other uses!

OneLittleBabyTerror · 05/07/2012 15:39

One thing I bought too much of is muslins! I got like a dozen of them and they just take up space in DDs drawers. DD wasn't a sicky baby so not vomit to mop. I did use muslins to line the changing may initially bit figured out I could just change DD at night with sleeping bag still on and underneath. (Very silly mum. Took me ages too to work out I could take a baby vest off without going through the head).

If you do want to express a bit for a bottle then do wait until you have established bf.

As for what you need an old ice cream tub and some milton tablets is fine. You can buy milk storage bags that are pre sterilised so you can express into a sterile tub then pour the milk into a bag for fridge or freezer. Try hand expressing before paying lots for a pump. Try looking at kelly mom website for technique :)

Muslin squares 100s of them Grin
