Weight gain freak out!

Hi all

I weighed myself this morning after months of putting it off (the last time I was weighed was at 10 week appt) I'm now 27 weeks and it looks like I've put on just under 2 stone!

Was NOT expecting it to be that much, I'm now horrendously overweight, was 11.3 to start with and feel a bit shocked, is this normal at this stage? And can I 'diet' to try and lose some before baby? Want to be in better health before the labour. I walk to and from work every day - about 20 mins each way but apart from that not much exercise undertaken.

Weirdly, if I had put on 2 stone normally, I'm sure I would look like a blob/weeble but I actually don't, a bit on legs, arms and bum maybe but like I've put on half a stone or something. I know some is baby but not the rest!

Basically I feel like a greedy failure? What can I do about it? before MW bollocks me at next appt :)

TIA

Stay off the scales.

Can you tell what is baby and placenta, amniotic fluid, increased blood volume, essential fat stores for BF and water and what is retained cake?

Thought not. Wink

Just be sensible with your diet (as much as you can) and worry about getting the weight off afterwards. Pregnant women do gain weight. As long as you're not mainlining cake and crap then don't worry.

Agree with Flisspaps. Had a rough 1st trimester where I thought I was getting FAT and got quite down about it, but once it was actually 'bump' figured 'ah sod it, I'm preggers, who care's?'.

I put on a bit more than recommended with my DD I think, wasn't religious about weighing myself or monitoring what I should be gaining, but lost it all quite easily afterwards, with breastfeeding & going for walks with baby. Figure this time, I'll have a toddler and a baby, so no excuse!! Grin (Although, disclaimer; I wasn't overweight on either occassion really, although BMI is always the higher end of normal range, so it may be harder if you've got a tad more to lose...)

Just try to eat healthily wherever possible, get your 5-a-day etc so baby gets all the goodness & leave the weightwatching until you've got the baby outside...

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm 26 weeks and have gained 3 stone already. :-( I'm mortified.

I was so mortified I tried going on a stupid diet (I know I know I shouldn't have)
BUT it didn't work. I didn't loose weight. So such is life. I'm just trying not to put anymore on!

Cheekychops84 · 05/07/2012 14:00

I weighed more then u pre preg so dnt say ur horrendously overweight otherwise I'm doubly wubbly horrendously overweight ! Ha ha

Littlecherublegs · 05/07/2012 14:02

Im 30 weeks pregnant and have put on 2 stones and I was pretty mortified at that!

BUT I'm pregnant so Im bound to put on weight and would be much more worried if I wasnt!!

Im trying to eat sensibly (ish) though am not stopping myself from having any goodies (have just in fact had bacon butties, a packet of crisps and a mini toblerone for lunch!!). Am aiming for my 5 a day though sometimes dont manage it but dont beat myself up over it and am certainly not going on a diet.

As said above, after baby is born Im sure the weight will come off as a combination of breastfeeding and walking with the pram,so am not worrying about it now.

Try not to stress over it (easier said than done I know!) Smile

I'm in the same boat. 25 weeks and put on nearly 2 stone already. I put on 5 with DS and was miserable so I'm paranoid about getting fat. But the good news is that with walking (the kid would never sleep otherwise), eating healthily (didn't want DS eating crap) and breastfeeding (huge milk monster) I managed to lose it all plus another stone before falling pregnant again. I won't say don't worry at all because that's how I ended up eating my way to whale dimensions last time but I will say try not to worry too much. Unfortunately there are no official guidelines in the UK of what a healthy weight gain is in pregnancy, but weight gain is inevitable so there's no point stressing about it. Just eat healthily and not for two - with determination you will lose it once you've given birth.

Aworryingtrend · 05/07/2012 14:11

I have read in a couple of pregnancy books that it is recommended that you gain between 1 and 3 stone for the whole pregnancy. So if you look at it as you are more than 2/3 way through having gained less than 2/3 maximum recommended weight it seems quite reasonable?

Spice17 · 05/07/2012 14:42

Thanks ladies, I was just soooo shocked. I thought, OK, if I've gone up to 12 I can handle that and then just over 13 appeared - I nearly fell off the bloody scales! Shock

Told DH 'think I've put on 2 stone' but just can't bear to tell him what that actually means in terms of weight.

He was nice though and said 'don't worry you're pregnant' whilst secretly panicking about a 2, 3, 4 stone overweight post baby nightmare wife - probably!

I think it's at the top end of normal, so really nothing to worry about at all :)

I'm 27 weeks and have gained 1 1/2 stones and it's all gone to my bump, I don't seem to have pudgy arms/legs/face or anything!! :)

SimplySoo · 05/07/2012 18:08

I'm feeling like this too, just feel like a blob. Does anyone know if the midwife cares? As in, at my next appointment might she remark on my over-average weight gain? Is it something they monitor? Next appointment is next week at 24 weeks.

Flisspaps · 05/07/2012 18:16

Simply - no, weight isn't routinely monitored. They take it at your booking-in, then usually never again.
