Hi not sure if this is the right place to post but am confused! I've bought a moses basket but was told you can't use the little blanket in it when baby is born? What do they sleep in? What is a sleeping bag? Do they sleep in that? There are so many conflicting views I'm so confused!! Thanks

The cover that comes with them is too thick for a newborn baby, and sleeping bags are only for babies over 8lbs I think - theior head needs to be too big to slip through the neck hole!

Even though I had too 8lbs'ers I used a sheet and a baby blanket with the dd's. And adjusted them depending on temperature.

If it's warm, you might not need any covers.

Is the blanket like a little padded duvet? If so then they're just a bit crappy - don't know why you couldn't use one in theory.

Get some cot sheets/blankets and wrap baby in one of those. Or a sleeping bag (the baby ones have armholes in unlike adult bags Grin) - TK Maxx usually have them.

Your not to use the blanket cos it's too thick. Newborns can overheat quickly n at the same time get cold quick too. Also putting the baby at the foot of the basket the blanket would be too long n cover their face if it's anything like the one that came with ours. The sleep bags ate for bigger babies as a newborn can wriggle into it.

Cellular blankets are best as they keep in the heat but great for layering too. Plus they are cheap

Thanks everyone! So cellular blankets and I presume they sleep in a sleepsuit the ones with the arms and legs?! Sorry if silly question!

Yes a sleepsuit with arms and legs, mine had a vest under aswell, but that depends on temperature.

And don't forget if you fold the blanket in 2 it is the equivalent of 2 blankts for the baby. That didn't occur to me until midwife pointed it out Grin

What they sleep in depends on the weather. Dd was born in march. If it was cold a short sleeve vest and a sleep suit. Recently she's just slept in a sleep suit. When we had the hot spell just a vest and no blankets. Sometimes she's just been comfy with just a nappy n a muslin over her. It really does depends but you'll suss it Smile

The baby sleeping bags are brilliant. If your newborn is big enough, you can use them straight away. Your baby is always snuggled up cosy so you don't have to tuck them in when you put them down, or worry about the 'feet to foot' thing.
We used sheets and blankets (well tucked in) to begin with though, and just adjusted the layers according to the room temp. It was very hot last summer when DS was born (hot summer, imagine that!) and some nights he just had a vest and nappy on!

Ive bought some sleeps units that have feet in them and some swaddling muslin type things. He will be here in September - does that sound okay?

BillyBollyBandy · 04/07/2012 19:16

Not all babies like being swaddled, mine were both starfish, so I would get a couple of sheets and a celular blanket as well. Just so you have something to do when newborn is crying and you have no idea why Grin
