How can I tell if my baby is breech?

The midwife said not at last visit (last week) but I still only feel movements (hard kicks) right down around my cervix and at the back in my bottom. I only ever feel fluttery movements at the top/sides of my bump.

This has me convinced that the baby IS still breech (I am 32 wks pg btw).

I have a consultants appt in two weeks, not seeing anyone until then.

Do you get pressure under your ribs? Heartburn? This can sometimes indicate a breech.

IIRC I felt a lot of pressure in my pelvic area with ds who was head down from about 20 weeks. Dd1 was breech until 39 weeks (!) and I could feel a lot of pressure under my ribs and had heartburn from hell (none at all with ds)

I had heartburn and my baby wasn't breech, so it doesn't necessarily mean this.

I think the only way for sure to know is a scan. Most midwives can tell by feeling, but some of them get it wrong. My GP got it wrong with me (told me baby was breech at 40 weeks when he wasn't), but GPs are more likely to make mistakes than midwives because they're not doing it all the time.

Your own intuition is probably quite a good guide.

I've got a possible breech at 34 weeks (midwife can't tell - belly like a bag of animated spanners) with lots of high movement and everything stuffed up against diaphragm - i think a lot depends on your body shape as to what you feel. I'm going to get a scan soon - don't like not knowing.

Enid, my baby was breech at 29 weeks and then they told me they thought it had turned but i was like you. I just kept feeling liitle prods really low and thought it must still be breech as it couln't possibly be it's head.
At 38 weeks i saw a consultant and begged for a quick scan to reassure me and had a locely lovely Asian Doc who said it was very important that i felt happy and got the scanner.
You could ask and just say how incredibly worried you are. (although obviously it could still turn back)
Hope it all goes well.

no not particularly restricted under ribs

terrible hearburn though but I've had that before (hairy babies Grin)

I suppose its just weird only feeling the kicks right at the bottom of my bump not anywhere else.

Even if it is breech now it could well turn in the next couple of weeks? So will leave it to consultant to decide.

Of course I looked up breech babies on google and read the bit about some babies being breech due to neurological problems so am now stressing Wink

Yes i get awful heartburn too and have hairy ones. This one has started already and i'm only 13 weeks.

The only real difference I could feel was that the kicks were all quite low down. The baby was breech until 35wks, and then transverse until 36wks. At 37wks the baby is now oblique but with his/her head downwards. I can still feel fluttery movements down low but it feels more like arms waving about than being kicked. The MW guessed the positions correctly and this was then verified with scans.

My dd was breech. I was at the hospital at about 37 weeks and was told she was breech. The next week at my midwife appt the midwife told me she had turned. Was at hospital at 39 weeks and was told by midwife there that dd was definately breech - scan proved it. I was taken in the next day to have her turned. It was very uncomfortable to have her turned and because of this I think you would have definately felt the baby turn if it has.

I was secretly convinced that dd1 and ds were breech, 'cos I mistook the baby's hard pointy bum for a head. When dd2 then was breech, the difference was quite noticeable the little head was much harder and less pointy at the top of my bump than the bums of the other two had been. It also used to move back and forwards between about 12 o'clock and about 3 o'clock on my bump (IYSWIM), which seems an unlikely kind of movement for a bottom, but was more plausible for a head. But the midwife never noticed it was my GP who picked it up, mercifully saving me from going into labour with an undiagnosed breech.

I am 30 weeks and I have a breech baby too my bump is a different shape this time and you can make out a bum shape keep getting pains in the top of the bump as well especially if bend down

mawbroon · 01/03/2006 10:49

My ds was breech. I was always confused by where I could feel the kick. I was getting kicked at the bottom and the top of my bump at the same time!! Turned out he was breech, but had one leg stuck by his head and the other tucked below. I could always tell where his head was though as it bobs about when you prod your bump.

BTW ds was stuck as I have a heart shaped uterus, (which the consultant found out during cs) so please don't let my experience frighten you as it's not very common.

And I'm not going to say "oh don't worry there's still time to turn" as I was at the point of almost bopping anyone that dared say that to me!!
