Parma ham & prawns!

Hi everyone

My surgery doesn't let us have the first appointment with the midwife until 10 weeks so I can't ask them. I know that you shouldn't eat parma ham and prawns when you are pregnant but can you eat them if they are cooked? Thanks.

Prawns are fine if cooked. Parma ham is fine anyway I think. There's some general guidance on the nhs website.

Lots of the advice about food is very over cautious anyway, based on avoiding teeny tiny virtually non-existent risks of getting very specific types of food poisoning.

I've had a massive obsession with prawns since about 12 weeks - had them every week, if not a few times a week since! It's really only about making sure they're cooked but it's not like you would eat uncooked prawns anyway, so it's fine!

Cooked prawns are fine.

Parma ham is fine too - seem to remember looking into it during my previous pregnancy. Hope it's fine anyway: had a huge plate of it (with two small slices of the 'melon' part!) last week on holiday!!

I craved prawns with DD, and had a prawn sandwich pretty much every day, except for when I had tuna which pg ladies are also not meant to have in excess.

Cooked prawns and Parma ham are fine.

Both are fine. I'm not sure you should ever be eating uncooked prawns though even if you're not pregnant.

Cooked prawns are fine (just make sure they are from somewhere reputable and haven't been hanging around).

Parma ham used to be "banned" but the NHS changed its guidance at the end of May this year to say it now thinks Parma ham, salami etc are fine.
