Breech Baby....

RazzleDazzle91 · 03/07/2012 20:02

Basically I'm 31weeks pregnant and my little boy is laying across my tummy, legs to the right and head to the left. He has been in this position since my first 12week scan. Midwife has already spoken to me about being induced at 38weeks due to him being breech and a big baby. Has anyone else had anything like this before?
Any help is welcome. Thanks a lot.

My SIL had a transverse lie at 36 weeks. Baby turned head down by her edd and she had a quick, straightforward labour at about 41 weeks.

RazzleDazzle91 · 03/07/2012 20:17

So a transverse lie, is that how my baby's laying? Cause my midwife uses the term "breech". Sorry I'm new to all this :) x

Hi OP, I'm being induced for other reasons, 33 wks currently and baby also transverse.

Surely they don't induce transverse? I know you can try VB with breech but don't you have the option of that or CS? We have a few weeks for them to spin yet but I think you need to question your MW.

Good luck :)

I'm so sorry but I'm completely new to mumsnet and haven't got a clue what your letters stand for! Lol. Silly me :s xx

Sorry, OP means original poster (of the thread). CS is a c-section and VB is a vaginal birth, MW is midwife :)

RazzleDazzle91 · 03/07/2012 20:32

Thanks you, Loislane78. Tbh with you I haven't got a clue if they are allowed to induce or not. Just been told that depending on my 32 and 36week scans they will induce me at 38! I'm seeing my consultant tommorrow afternoon so I might question him about it all. Its all so mind boggling to me as its my first baby!x

Ah well that's good you see the consultant tomorrow. Just get your list of questions prepared (I have the same to come next week:))

I would have thought if he stayed transverse til 38 weeks they will want to book you in for a caesarian. My sister in law (SIL) had a CS for transverse lie at 39 weeks. It was fine.

You could explore the option of having External Cephalic Version (ECV) which is manual turning of your baby from transverse to cephalic by the obstetrician. I had this when my baby was breech at 37 weeks. It was worth it for me but only about half of the procedures work.

Have a look at www.spinningbabies.com/baby-positions/all-positions/sideways to get some ideas of what you can do to encourage the baby to turn.

RazzleDazzle91 · 03/07/2012 20:41

Yes, that sounds like a good idea! Lol. Poor man will be bombared with questions! Haha. Ow well thank you for your help and I wish you the best of luck with your new addition.xx

I didn't either. I'll cut and paste my experience of ECV for you when I find the thread. Back in a minute...

Pascha · 03/07/2012 20:52

Found it! Here you go:

"Hope the following ECV experience of mine is helpful for anyone else faced with this option:

They put a CTG monitor on me for about half an hour whilst the Terbutaline injection to relax my uterine muscles took effect. When it was time to start they tilted the bed slightly head-down and then the lovely specialist registrar, with the assistance of the midwife, under the consultant's guidance, scanned to check position. Sure enough he was still breech, legs extended.

Then she started kneading my tummy just like it was dough, starting at the bottom, alternating with the head. Its very physical, she was standing up sweating with the effort of pushing his little bottom out of my pelvis and holding it there whilst she checked on the monitor. She just kept going for about 10 minutes, inching him round to transverse, then finally to cephalic.

I'm so glad DH was there holding my hand, because even though i'm not squeamish and have a quite high tolerance for pain, I lay there head turned away, tears in my eyes, from the force she needed to use to get the little bugger to move!

Now I'm home with strict instructions not to do anything strenuous and try to keep upright for a few hours to make sure he doesn't turn back round. I think I will have a bruise or two tomorrow, but it was completely worth it."

gallicgirl · 03/07/2012 20:58

I had successful ECV too- definitely worth asking about.

RazzleDazzle91 · 03/07/2012 20:59

Mmmm that's very interesting pascha!! Something to deffinatly think about and my pain tolerance is pretty good (y) lol. Thank you for all of your help!x

Thanks for that description pascha, really useful. I have an ECV on Monday when i'll be 37+3 as my baby was breech at 36 weeks (the little bugger was head down at 28 weeks Angry) so it's interesting to read about it. Glad it worked for you, fingers crossed it does for me too!

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 03/07/2012 23:13

Sorry haven't read whole thread as should be asleep...

Have you tried the website spinning babies or any yoga/birthing positions/acupuncture/Manual Manipulation to get the baby to turn?

Transverse lie is when the baby is lying across your belly, like s/he is in a hammock. As far as I know you would always have a CS (C-Section) for this type of lie - not be induced.

Breech, is where the baby is coming out feet/bum first, rather than head first. You can have a vaginal birth this way if you would like, but they (NHS) would again suggest CS.

Hi Ladies, just a quick update, I've been to see my consultant and little man has now changed from transverse to breech :s lol. They also had to change all my notes from "breech" to "transverse" where silly midwives had written it wrong. Ow well in the end he said don't start to panic as of yet as he still has time to spin :) x

That's good razzle, seems not too uncommon for them to be wrong way round at this stage but nice to hear don't panic from the consultant :)
