Pale blue nursery for a girl?!

We don?t know what we are having (I suspect girl!) and I am a bit stumped on the room decoration side of things. I really want baby blue but am a bit worried that if she is a girl people will think we wanted a boy ? is that as ridiculous as it sounds? I don?t want lilac or yellow and I also don?t want to stick to white either. I have seen some lovely blue gingham curtains in the same but am holding back because of these notions! Anyone else been in same boat?

Yes, agree with those who say shell probably ask for pink when older so do what you like until she can ask for otherwise.

ZhenThereWereTwo · 02/07/2012 16:56

I have this pale blue in my daughter's bedroom, she specifically requested blue when we moved into our flat.

She has now decided she wants it red (she is 3), but that will not be happening!

Greypuddle · 02/07/2012 17:43

As MrsPear and Clarella said, the whole blue/pink thing is relatively new and, I think, getting a bit crazy. Blue sounds lovely for a nursery for either sex. www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/When-Did-Girls-Start-Wearing-Pink.html

I would go for a duck egg blue for a girl, it would look fab with fuscia pink and spring green you see so often in cushions.

Or maybe a teal, which would also look great with a really bold pink, but equally good with red, orange or white for a more masculine touch.

Remember the decorating colour rule of 70:20:10...

If your walls and window dressings are in one colour they account for the 70 - but you have freedom to completely change the feel with the accessories, which is where the 20 and 10 come in...

You might want to make the 20 white (with furniture, linen, etc) and just wait to add some really fab accessories in an accent colour later...

Have fun!

My DD has a blue bedroom. It is great. Once she asked for black. She's asked for red (it has red bits too) but settled on blue.

She has never asked for pink, she is nearly six. I don't see why it's an issue (or inevitable that there has to be a pink phase, although I know there is still time)

BikeRunSki · 02/07/2012 19:21

DD is 8 months old, her bedroom is pale blue with white fluffy cloud stickers and hot air balloon Curtains and mobile. I knew what I was having, just didn't. want a pink room in my house. She can have oink when she is old enough to ask for it. Obtusely, DS's room was not pale blue when he was a baby. It was pale green, and I knew what I was having then too!

browneyesblue · 02/07/2012 19:39

Weird - I had just been looking at this gorgeous nursery before I read your thread. It's for a girl, and has lots of blue's and turquoises in it.

We knew DS was a boy before he was born, but went for a Scandi-style room - white, with lots of bright, fresh pops of colour, including pink. Just because he's a boy didn't mean it needed to be all blue!

funchum8am · 02/07/2012 20:44

I'm definitely having a blue room for baby though we don't know what we're having yet in terms of gender of the LO - I just love blue and hate pink. I am finding it hard to buy clothes that aren't gender stereotyped though so am considering sodding it and buying anything I like the look of, and if people think the baby is dressed "wrongly" for their gender, I'll get all political on them...I'm sure they'll soon find it easier to avoid the comments on that line!

thisisyesterday · 02/07/2012 21:18

funchum, try h&m for baby clothes. they're beginning to succumb to the blue/pink thing, but they quite often have lovely more gender neutral stuff.

if budget is no issue then look up some of the scandinavian kids clothing firms.
nordic kids sells some beautiful stuff

GnocchiNineDoors · 02/07/2012 21:19

Funchum...pop into H&M. They have loadd of bright unisex vests tops and leggings. I buy some of their boy stuff for dd and have the odd girl bits put away for dc2 regardless of gender.

GnocchiNineDoors · 02/07/2012 21:19

Haha xpost

Mothpop · 02/07/2012 21:35

Ditto everyone - blue for a girl - perfect.
Not sure if it's your 'thing' but Jo Jo Maman Bebe do wonderful sets of stickers of trees, birds, butterflies etc that can be easily applied to walls, taken off and moved around. I bought some last week for my DC's room (due in 3 1/2 weeks) - everyone who has seen them so far has been really bowled over by them. :)

paperclips · 02/07/2012 22:34

Blue sky with clouds and rainbows and birds? You could make it look lovely.

Even if you did want it to be girly, you could still make a pale blue room look very feminine if you picked the right things, and it would be far more classy than pink. I think pale "baby pink" pink is kind of tacky.

steben · 03/07/2012 08:23

Thanks for the posts everyone - some great ideas and I really like the cloud idea - am thinking I might go for a ocean type theme. Keep the walls and curtains pale blue - white bedding, then some ocean style celing mobile and maybe some cloud stickers :)

I don't see the problem, pale blue can be a perfectly nice pretty colour for a little girl's room. The cloud/ocean theme sounds lovely, very restful :)

Never mind what other people might think - is anyone else even going to see the room anyway?

5madthings · 03/07/2012 08:49

yes blue will be fine, lovely in fact! and if you want to you can get lovely stickers etc to decorate, jo jo mamam bebe sell some really nice ones with birds and things that are very pretty and would like nice on blue :)

re unisex clothing, h&M is goood, also frugi, and next have a really nice stripey mulit-colour range that is unisex and bright and cheerful at the moment :)

elizaregina · 03/07/2012 08:52

i have pale blue on some walls and it looks lovley with a few pink accesories like a pink lamp etc..

devilinside · 03/07/2012 09:50

My dd has always had blue walls in her room since she was a baby. It's a bright, warm blue and it looks gorgeous when matched with pink or purple. Hate pink overkill in bedrooms

DawnOfTheDee · 03/07/2012 09:52

My daughter's room is teal. We had it painted as our guest room then found out i was pregnant (bit of a surprise). Decided we'd keep it as it's a nice bright colour and we couldn't be arsed repainting

WinterMymble · 03/07/2012 18:26

Pale blue is gorgeous for a girl. And remember how at the start of the twentieth century pale blue was the girl's colour in many Western countries, while pinkish was fkr boys. These associations are really variable with era. Many wedding dresses were blue in the Victorian era too (partly because of associatiins with the Virgin Mary, according to some historians), until Queen Victoria changed the trend.

I am going with blue for lots of girl things too :).

ellesabe · 03/07/2012 19:04

It sounds lovely :)
We didn't know the gender of our dc1 so we went for a very pale minty green...

funchum8am · 06/07/2012 18:15

Thanks for the tips re gender neutral clothing - I will definitely get onto H&M (and maybe splash out on Nordic Baby at some point for a few bits!)

love the sound of the JoJo Maman Bebe stickers too.

ghosteditor · 06/07/2012 18:22

Go for it. DD (6 months) has a pale blue room with a Babar et les ballons poster and a few other posters, and it looks great. She has cream curtains with big brightly coloured spots too.

I dress her in all sorts of colours - she looks fab in bright pink too.

If anyone says anything just keep saying 'er...why not?' with a vaguely unamused expression and let them get on with it.

Read pinkstinks for inspiration Wink

pumpkinsweetie · 06/07/2012 18:23

Paint it whatever colour you wish, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, as it isn't their bedroom!

Wiggy29 · 06/07/2012 20:45

Virtually my whole home is blue, I'm always drawn to it. If I have a dd I imagine that room will be blue too.
