First Scan and Baby Book

Hi - I have my first scan booked for the begginning of August. In my letter it says - in bold caps - "When you come for your scan appointment it is important to bring your pregnancy book"

I have no such book.

A friend of mine is also pregnant and mentioned that she had been given something called a Bounty pack - i asked about this when i went to see the doctor to tell them that i am pregnant etc and i asked about a Bounty Pack and he said all that would be done at my first scan.

It feels as though i have missed something important somewhere - any advice? If my gp doesnt give me the baby book and nor do i get one when i go for my scan - where does it materialise from?

Thanks.

Your pregnancy book should be given to you by your midwife at your first appointment with her. Have you had this appointment yet?

mylittlemonkey · 01/07/2012 21:19

Yes, should have been filled out and given to you at your booking in apt with midwife. It it a4 sized with all your pg details filled out by midwife. Your first scan is normally arranged by your midwife at your booking in apps. How was your Scan booked for you?

LilyRosa · 01/07/2012 21:21

All i have had is an appointment with the doctor at my GP surgery. We discussed which hospital i want to be under and so far all i have received is a letter from them with my appointment. As yet nothing about a midwife.

I got mine at first scan.

Load of rubbish it was too.

LilyRosa · 01/07/2012 21:23

mylittlemonkey - who booked your booking in appointment with the midwife then?

OP posts:
MikeLitoris · 01/07/2012 21:25

If you mean your green notes the mw filled all my info in at the booking in appt and then took it with her.

I got it back at first scan.

I thought you meant the text book type thing that comes in the bounty pack.

LilyRosa · 01/07/2012 21:28

OK - so i seemed to have somehow managed the booking in appt with the midwife - who books that for you?

It varies as to who makes it.

If you've seen the GP I'd expect them to do it for you. The booking in appt is at about 10-12 weeks, they give you your notes, Bounty pack (it's not exciting, all advertising bumph) and do booking bloods/urine tests if you want them done.

I didn't see the GP 2nd time round and made my appt direct with the MW. Might be worth finding the number for your Community Midwife team and asking them what they do in your area.

LilyRosa · 01/07/2012 21:35

Thanks Flisspaps that's v helpful. Will give them a call.

Don't worry, it's probably just default text. Explain at the appointment that you haven't been given it yet. They'll probably tell you how/when you'll get it. My hospital only gives them out at 16 weeks.

tiredteddy · 01/07/2012 21:37

After my GP appointment to confirm my pregnancy she gave me the scan referral and some leaflets. I had to send the scan referral myself and then arrange a booking in appointment with the midwife for when I was about 9 weeks. At the booking in appointment i answered all the questions the maternity notes were begun and I was given the bounty pack. It must be a different system in different areas. Maybe you should ring your GP surgery and ask whether you should make an appointment with the midwife or whether they will contact you?

mylittlemonkey · 01/07/2012 22:00

When I made my appt with GP the surgery then gave my tel number to midwife who then rang me to arrange booking in appt. it obviously differs in different areas. I would ring ring gp to ask about midwife appt as she was one who signed form fr NHS card for free dentist and prescriptions and you will need that. You should also ave your midwifes number or another contact number in case you ave any issues with your pg you want to discuss. Def ring gp tomorrow about this.

LilyRosa · 02/07/2012 16:18

Thank you all for your replies - i've called the gp who gave me the number for my midwe team. Theyve told me that i dont see them until im 16 weeks.

A friend of mine has got me rather freaked by telling me that by now in her pregnancy she'd had her family histpry taken, as well as had blood tests and urine tests and had been talked through risks and what other tests are available.

Am probably worrying unduly but waiting till 16 weeks seems like a very long time.

Any advice greatfully received.

Seems strange that they said you don't see your midwife until wk 16. After confirming my pregnancy, my doctor passed the notes onto the local midwife team who contacted me at week 9 for the booking in appointment. I was given my pregnancy book then. Our hospital refuses to scan without expectant mothers bringing it with them.

LilyRosa · 02/07/2012 16:27

I really cant believe it varies so widly from area to area. I asked the midwife what about the book - it really does say it in my latter in bold caps - and she said just to say that youve not had the appointment yet.

Hmmm that sounds very strange. I am pretty sure you should have a booking appt with midwives before 12 weeks. They should take blood tests for various things and also ask you whether you want downs screening at your 12 week scan.

Having said that I know that some areas don't do screening at the 12 week scan, they do blood tests at 16 weeks instead. So maybe you are in one of those areas? Where abouts are you?

LilyRosa · 02/07/2012 16:35

Im in South East London.

I thought that too minipie Confused

I guess different PCTs do it differently.

beckslovestimmy · 02/07/2012 17:08

In the NICE guidelines which there should be a copy of in your bounty pack it states that 'your first appointment should be as early in your pregnancy as possible' in this app you should get info about folic acid, food hygiene, lifestyle antenatal screening options ect. Your second appointment ' booking appointment ' ideally should take place by 10 weeks' the NICE guidelines ' routine antenatal care for healthy pregnant women' is available online. I've been told they will do all blood tests and urine test at first scan. You have to sign to say what screening tests you want and have had detailed info about all of them. Hope this helps as the NICE guidelines are national so should be followed where ever you are?

Flisspaps · 02/07/2012 17:37

becks NICE guidelines are just a guide though, not a rule so NHS Trusts don't have to stick to them

LilyRosa · 02/07/2012 18:25

No bounty pack yet either. Sad

TittyBojangles · 02/07/2012 20:23

Don't worry about the bounty pack, you aren't missing much. But pretty sure you should see your mw for a 'booking in' appt before you are 12 weeks. You have blood tests, they tell you about diet, weigh you, folic acid etc, if they do nuchal scams in your area the mw will need to explain these so you can choose whether to have one or not. Did your gp cover any of this?

PricklyPickle · 02/07/2012 20:47

I'm in south east London too, i had a booking in appt at around 9 weeks. But i haven't had a bounty pack either, although when i went for my 12 week scan there were loss of ladies with them. My midwife took all my details at my booking in and said she'd give me my book at my 16 week appt.
