Best place for good quality but cheapish vests and babygros?

I've bought a few bits in 0-3m which are nice (in style and quality), but I'm thinking I'm going to need some basics in newborn size. Following on from another thread it looks as if these might get out through the mill so might be best if I don't spend lots on them. That said I don't want horrid material etc.

Where's best for this stuff??

I got some great ones in sainsburys. Washed well and they had the inbuilt scratch mitts. 3 for £5 or £6 I think. Most supermarkets do basic ranges and they are in them for such a short time anyway.

I got lots of the plain white stuff from M&S. It's pretty cheap and stays soft with lots of washing. The patterned ones are a bit more expensive, but having tried lots of different brands I personally like the shape/sizing and fabric of the M&S stuff. Boots stuff is a bit more expensive but also nice quality. I had some vests from Asda that were okay too, but I don't think the price difference between Asda and M&S is that huge - you can get a 7 pack of plain white vests in M&S for £7. I think M&S are softer, but have bought clothes from Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's and not had any problems with any of them.

I also got one of the 'starter sets' like this (well DSis bought it for me as DD was early and I didn't have anything small enough) and I used all the pieces out of it, especially the little trousers with feet in - much nicer than socks that keep slipping off!

Well I bought most of my 4yo dd's basics from Tesco and they lasted her well, and are now about to be reused for dd2. Other than Tesco, Next, Asda, M&S and Sainsburys are good, I would advise avoiding Mothercare though, the quality o their clothes is terrible.

emsyj · 30/06/2012 17:36

I agree about Mothercare - really really expensive and not worth the money.

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/06/2012 17:40

H&m does teensy stuff and good quality.

pumpkinsweetie · 30/06/2012 17:41

Primark and Peacocks, bought loads in there with all my dds and they have lasted years so much so they have been passed to sil then on to my friendSmile
Tesco & Asda's aren't too bad either, don't bother with Mothercare as its overpriced and the quality is the same as everywhere else unless of course you want a special outfit

TeaandHobnobs · 30/06/2012 17:42

I've found Asda and Sainburys stuff to be nice and soft - although I've noticed some of the sainsburys stuff has a few loose threads here and there Hmm

Cheriefroufrou · 30/06/2012 19:08

the M&S multi packs are actually much better value than a lot of "cheap" shops
and nice and soft and hard wearing too

Sirzy · 30/06/2012 19:13

Cant beat asda for vests and babygros

cairnterrier · 30/06/2012 19:15

Sainsburys. Vests and babygros bought for DS1 now being used for DS2.

peggyblackett · 30/06/2012 19:16

Tescos have done 3 dcs!

DorcasGailen · 30/06/2012 19:20

I liked the Asda ones as they have a really wide neck which makes them easier to pull off down the body rather than over the head if you have a nappy leak.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 30/06/2012 19:42

M&s

Buy cheap buy twice.

M&s not expensive just a little more than the supermarkets and everything stays on shape, doesn't bobble, washes well etc

Otherwise, tescos do quite good stuff.

baby sales -not neccasarily NCT but i went to one last week in village hall, got never worn gorg next tight s- 50p still in packet, huge amount of pre worn adn new vests and stuff - a pound.

all makes there - from sainsburies to monsoon, jojo maman, there is so much stuff out there, and i get boutique swish style things from car boots! AND tk max.

PeazlyPops · 30/06/2012 20:37

Asda and Primark vests and babygros are really cheap, and great quality. They wash really well, and can be tumble dried.

mrsalwaysawake · 30/06/2012 21:27

Sainsbury's and Asda vests both seem ok quality-wise (received as gifts). Matalan vests/sleepsuits not very good, but regular clothes are ok.

Sastra · 30/06/2012 21:31

Just happened to be by a big Asda and got lots of vests. They didn't have any babygros in the right size so will pop to Marks and stock to there. Fabulous! Thanks ladies!!

M&S. All my sleepsuits, vests etc bought for DD1 will be used again for DC3. All washed really well, can be tumble dried and have kept their shape.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/07/2012 08:20

Marks and Sainsburys.
