Hi, anyone suffering from hayfever? Mine is terrible. Any good tips for what to do other than sit inside, sneeze and bite my dh head off! Thanks.

I'm the same, so frustrating!
I have bought two ionising air purifiers which I have on in the living room and the bedroom which have made a bit of a difference at home- I'm not waking up feeling ill with it any more.
Other things I do which help are wearing sunglasses as much as possible, and smearing Vaseline up inside my nostrils. Actually I have some nice Moroccan rose lip balm which I have been using instead as it is more pleasant smell!
I also bought some saline nasal spray from the chemist ( well its supposedly homeopathic but as I'm a bit cynical about homeopathy I am only viewing it as a saline spray!) there were some eye drops in the same range which I may well try, as they may be soothing and stop me itching them!

You can actually take Piriton. I was prescribed it in my last pregnancy. I'm trying to stick to one a day at the moment though. Also Hayfever eye drops, sterimar saline nasal spray, big sunglasses and carrying loo roll everywhere! It's such a misery right now.

My GP looked in her big book of medicines and it is okay to take loratadine.

Belchica · 30/06/2012 17:03

I was advised by consultant this week that piriton can be taken BUT not as prescribed on the packet. He recommended I took one only when I really couldnt bear the symptoms any more ie. last resort.

My hayfever has been awful, my doc said I could use flixonase nasal spray, which I've used for a few years with good control, so I have been when it's bad, I sneeze a lot and get very crabby with bad hayfever, he did say avoid antihistamines if I can, I don't find them helpful anyway, just a good way to get to sleep! Hope you start feeling better soon Smile

Nasal steroid sprays (such as flixonase or beconase) are fine to use in pregnancy (as long as you don't use over the recommended dose). And safer to use than antihistamine tablets. Also sodium cromoglycate eyedrops. I find my hayfever is worse when I'm pregnant (something to do with increased blood flow through the nasal blood vessels). Also you need to wear sunglasses when outside, put a smear of vaseline inside your nostrils, and wash you face when you come inside.

It's dreadful this year. I use Beconase nasal spray, plus a version of Zyrtec on prescription. I take the tablet at night so it starts working, then the spray in the morning. Vaseline up the nose to help catch pollen.

DameFlatYouLent · 30/06/2012 20:50

It's awful this year, isn't it? I've pulled a muscle near my ribs from sneezing so much Sad Went to the doctor and she's prescribed beconase, as other posters have said. She was going to prescribe clarityn (loratidine I think) but the evidence was a bit underwhelming...steroid sprays transfer less apparently. I got some over-the-counter eyedrops too - the whites of my eyes were actually swelling up! Confused

Kirsty240287 · 30/06/2012 23:09

I'm suffering too :-( Mega itchy eyes and can't use eye drops cos I wear contact lenses, think I may get some nasal spray 2moz, see if that helps!

silvachick · 30/06/2012 23:55

I've used nasal spray a few times to no avail. It has been really bad this year and I seem to be worse now I'm pregnant. I took loratadine a couple of times when I couldn't bear it anymore but there doesn't seen to be much evidence that it is safe. It is getting me down this year (doesn't take much right enough!).

moogs1000 · 01/07/2012 08:57

Thanks, think I'll get to docs and see what they'll give me. Just feel so shitty all the time! My mouth itches too, so annoying! Just hope my pelvic floors hold out with all sneezin!
