Is it normal to go off perfume and other random things?

It's my first pregnancy so apologies if this is a silly question.

The thought of wearing perfume makes me feel weird, not sick or ill, but just like "I'm not putting anything smelly on my body". I'm really confused by this as I have 2/3 favourite perfumes and body lotions that I love and now can't use Sad Does this feeling go away.

The thought of wine, coffee and fast food have a similar effect.

I haven't been sick yet, just bit nauseous but friends keep asking if I'm ok as my face looks thin and my legs are too thin Confused. I've been the same size all my adult life and haven't definitely haven't lost weight. Im a bit paranoid that there is some sign that something is wrong.

Sorry, I don't really know what I'm asking really. Confused

Sounds very typical to me! With my DS1, I was similar - certain smells (even ones I had previously loved) just made my stomach turn. Certain foods had a terrible effect too. I think it's down to hormones. How many weeks are you?

Very normal! You might also find certain smells become...not attractive...more preferrable because they don't make you nauseous for me:bleach and manure.
I also had a craving for Tacos, then within a week I couldn't stand even the smell of tomatos.
Also I would buy some nappy sacks and keep a couple in your pocket/handbag. As when I was sick, I had very very little warning (I would sprint for the bathroom).

But being sick nauseous is "supposed" to be a good sign that everything is going well. It is quite normal to lose weight in the early weeks, but you normally put it back on before too long.

Yup - not felt hugely sick nor been sick but went off lots of things inc perfume. Was devastated couldn't have 70% dark Choc and honey! Taste has calmed down now am almost 19 weeks but still find smells odd and perfume is too strong. Weight has been weird - puffed up hugely at first, including face but now its all been migrating to my bum and middle, arms and face looking skinny. I think all to do with fat stores to prepare for bf or later in preg when it might be hard to eat much. It's a weird time - plus the anxiety!

Sounds typical to me too - I remember the same thing happening!

I've gone off a couple of my perfumes too, and went off tea and coffee (amongst many other things!) for the first 10 weeks or so.

It's an instinctive thing, your sense of smell and taste are heightened due to your body detecting what will be good/ bad for you and baby.

The amount of times i've gone out to eat with family and smelt such strong things that put me off, yet when I asked them if they could smell it they said no!

Trust your body, it knows what it's doing :)

I developed a very expensive Aveda shampoo and conditioner habit in my first pregnancy because the smell of anything else on my hair once it had dried smelled too 'chemically'.

Meringue33 · 29/06/2012 12:46

Had to change moisturiser hand soap and shower gel as smells made me boak :(

LimeLeafLizard · 29/06/2012 13:18

Sounds normal to me. I went off my brand new expensive perfume, and coffee, and all smelly food like garlic and chilli.

Kaloobear · 29/06/2012 13:22

My sense of smell went haywire. I had to open a new bottle of milk every time I wanted any because if it had been opened before, even 10 minutes before, it smelt off. I also thought our fridge smelt like rotten food and was convinced something was mouldy in there, kept cleaning and cleaning it. DH couldn't smell anything and I never found anything mouldy!

In my first trimester my sense of smell was really acute - I couldn't stand the slightest hint of washing up liquid! I got a bit ott re rinsing all the dishes especially cups as I couldn't drink water as I could 'taste' the washing up liquid!!
