Belly hurts when I walk...anyone else?

Hi, I'm 26+2 and I'm getting a strange stich like sensation in the right underside of my bump when I walk.

Sometimes this is only after I've been walking for over an hour or two, or it happens the morning after I've been walking. I feel like I want to hold my bump up and put presurre where it hurts (by rubbing it). Wondering if this is just more ligament stretching?

I'm not overweight. Size 12, nice neat bump which people keep telling me is small for six months...

Getting a little worried. Am used to back and pelvic pain - this feels more alarming!

I get this too! Am 29 weeks now but have had this since about 23. I walk a lot and sometimes it takes and hour or so to start, other times only 5 minutes. Might be related to how quickly I walk. I have checked with my MIL who is a MW and she says its normal...though she didn't say what it is. I find that stopping for a bit and bending forward helps (makes me think its muscular).

If anyone knows what causes this please share?!

twofurryones · 28/06/2012 12:03

I've had this both times, it tends to go away if I slow down. Not sure exactly what causes it but I had assumed it was to do with my abs being stretched out from behind.

Cheekychops84 · 28/06/2012 12:16

Yes I had to keep stopping lol it really hurt then I walked faster jus so I could get home and sit down ! Really hurt ! But at 35 weeks I haven't had it for a while now fingers crossed

3bees · 28/06/2012 12:18

I get a stitch underneath bump when I sit in the car for a while which goes once I get out and change positions

Thechick · 28/06/2012 13:02

I get this and I'm 19 wks. I think it is to do with the speed I'm walking.

MrsConfusion · 28/06/2012 13:35

I have been having exactly this pain since 22 weeks, now 25+1. It started coming on when I cycled, so I stopped doing that and now it comes when I walk too fast (tend to forget to slow myself down a bit and so march off at my usual pace). Right hand side of bump, fairly low but not hip-related, and really sharp/stabbing.

I asked the doctor about it and she said don't worry about it, but good to slow down/stop until it goes away. She suggested it might be Braxton Hicks triggered by exercise.

So take it gently ladies, and listen to the messages from your bodies! (I'm not very good at taking that advice myself...)

EarnestDullard · 28/06/2012 16:03

Me too! I'm 25+5 and have noticed this for the past week or so. Right hand side like you, underneath my bump. Feels sort of tender. From what I've read I thought it might be round ligament pain. I mentioned it to the mw and she just thought it was "one of those things" and it might ease off later in the pregnancy. It gets better if I slow right down, and eases off completely when I stop walking.

I am 34+3 and I have had this so much lately! It is really uncomfortable. I have had practically no pelvic, hip or back pain with this pregnancy-which is a relief after the last two!
But suddenly my bump has gotten so big. And it really hurts when I walk, even short distances. I get that stitch like pain, and feel like I need to hold my bump up.
I did ask a physio friend about getting a band to support bump. I have a history of a bulging disc, and she didn't recommend the band. Said that they could put more pressure on the spine, and just to really try to walk for very short distances only.

I'm 24 weeks and get that too, very achy on and off for the past few weeks if i stand or walk for a while. I find that it's made worse by carrying my bag on one shoulder, even the smallest bag across my body has an effect, and i need to try to balance the weight, or get to DP to carry it if he's around.

elvislives2012 · 28/06/2012 20:15

Me too!! Mainly if I'm walking quickly. I think of it as baby telling me to slow down :)

Naisy · 29/06/2012 09:23

Thanks ladies. Relieved to know this is normal - even if we may be 'over exercising' a bit! Smile

I got this a lot - I still get it, and so limit my walking - it gets really painful, and I have to stop, otherwise it is unbearable...

I bought this support underwear/brief from mothercare to help (I didn't want to get a belt as I didn't want those muscles to get weaker) and wear them when I go out...

After that, I ended up getting lots of symptoms associated with spd... not sure if its related...

Mentioned it to my midwife, but she didn't seem bothered... not very helpful! But I presume its the muscles stretching... also, seemed worse sometimes as I think the baby was in a transverse lie...

UML · 29/06/2012 19:13

I can't find the specific brief on the mothercare website, they probably don't stock it anymore, but I am sure you can find these kind of light bump supports elsewhere...

Naisy · 01/07/2012 09:16

Thanks UML, think I found what you mean on the NCT website...

I get it too and my midwife tells me it's just muscle and ligament pain. I'd you think about all the extra load your body is dealing with its not surprising that a few muscles are struggling to cope!

terilou87 · 01/07/2012 12:57

i have also been getting this my midwife advised getting a bump support which i did and it helped loads. something to do with your center of gravity being moved and the support puts it right hope this helps.

UML · 01/07/2012 13:28

They were similar to www.nctshop.co.uk/Carriwell-Full-Belly-Light-Support-Briefs/productinfo/1183/

I wouldn't personally recommend anything stronger, unless maybe your midwife etc recommends it (if your pain gets too much etc) because I think your body has to a degree, adapt to the changes, and perhaps it may not be able to do this if you are relying on a belt etc.

Hope it makes a difference!

UML · 01/07/2012 13:36

Oh, and I interpreted the pain as a signal to slow down, your body is changing a lot!

WinterMymble · 01/07/2012 23:45

Me too! It started around wk 27 for me. Mine was apparently very much ligament pain - midwife says itmatches exactky, but they checked baby anyway just to make sure. But walking especially fast is really quitw uncomfortable. Also i waddle like a oenguin since i have spd :)
