I just wanted to find out if anyone has had this and gone on to have a healthy baby?

This pregnancy has already had its troubles... I have already had bleeding in the early stages and a great deal of pain and was told it was due to a sub chorionic hematoma. When I had my 12 week scan last week I was told this had now gone (I have not bled in a few weeks) and that baby was fine and nuchal fold was 1.4 (normal). I skipped off into the sunset finally being able to relax into this pregnancy. I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks last year and have been so nervous about this current pregnancy.
Anyway I get a call today from an (overly) cheery midwife telling me that my bloods have come back in the high risk category (1 in 70) and did I want to have an Amnio or CVS test! She said I could see a consultant if I wished to discuss the results but perhaps I needed to take all this in and call her back.
I basically cried my eyes out and then called her back and got no reply! Am now sitting here wondering what the next step is and how serious this is.
If anyone can give me any advice I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

Poor you. First all the blood test is not very accurate and it's good your scan was normal. I had this with my last pregnancy risk was 1 in 85. I did have amnio at 20 weeks because it was my third child and I just needed to know. I now have a very healthy and lovely son. When I say the blood test is not accurate what I mean is for example if you are over 40 you are a 'high risk' automatically. It's a difficult decision to make but I say go and see the consultant and talk it through but keep it in the back of your mind your scan was positive. Can I also say I had six miscarriages between my first and second child due to a clotting problem so what with that then having an amnio I do understand what you are experiencing. Sounds like you need better midwife support too. I can also reassure you that I have three lovely healthy children now despite everything. Keep us posted x

Hello - being P is worrying without conversations like the one you have had! It must be so much more worrying seeing as you had a mc last year.

I've had a chromosomal disorder pregnancy (which I chose to end as it wouldn't have survived long). The nuchal fold was 5.8 and 1 in 2 chance. I had another pregnancy recently and I was given a one in 50 chance - he is now sat here gurgling away, so I don't' think you should panic yet.

From what I can remember, your bloods can push the risk factor up if you have recently had a virus, even if you felt fine. They also tested me for parvovirus(?? Think that was it) as that can push up the apparent risk in bloods. The fact that you have a 1.4 nuchal fold is really encouraging.

When I went through all of that last year, my MW was far from cheery, she sounded like they already knew the result. I was strongly encouraged to have an amnio (which didn't really hurt). Their 'knowing' tone let me know straight away things were not looking good.

Anything under 100 something is considered 'high risk' - as soon as you get over a certain age you are 'high risk'. I would say they are just adhering to procedure.

There is another section on here called anti natl tests and choices, all about this type of thing.

I wont' say try not to panic as you will:) BUt think of it this way, a 1 in 69 chance all is fine. Good luck, hope all is ok:) x

Thanks ladies for your posts and sorry for your loss AdiVic. I am 38 but she def said my hcg levels were high and my protein levels low (I think) but that could also mean other things! It was all a bit vague really! I tried phoning the hospital back about 50 times and even the consultants secretary but it seems at my hospital everyone had gone home by 4pm!
Midwife did mention another scan and blood tests at 16 weeks? not sure how helpful this is though..

I've still not heard from my midwife - has anyone had a scan & more blood tests at 16 weeks? I just wondered what the benefits of this test were...

Hi this is my first time posting but I really had to respond to you. I'm 16 weeks today. I had a nuchal measurement of 4.2 in my 12 week scan and was given a 1 in 5 chance of Downs before the CVS test. The rapid results came back a week later as normal and then everything else came back normal just last week. Our feotal echocardiogram also showed a normal healthy beating heart last week. Please don't fret. Although I know it's easy to say that now. I absolutely understand your worry.

MsBump · 27/06/2012 11:57

Thanks Witter. Glad all is ok with your baby. Did they tell you what the risks were for the CVS? my midwife said something like 1 in 400 risk of miscarriage but anything I find on the web says its a much higher risk.

MsBump

I'm so sorry that you are going through this - we've been there!!

Last Jan/Feb at my 12 week scan I was given fabulous results for everything except we came out with a high risk of 1:43 for Downs - the Nuchal was 2.8mm so on the high side of normal and my bloods weren't great. I opted for the CVS the next day as I just had to get it over and done with and we got the all clear a few days later. I now have a beautiful DS who will be 1 in four weeks.

I think what you need to remember is that with a 1:70 chance you still have 70 chances of having a perfectly healthy baby with no syndromes.

The CVS was ok, it wasn't pleasant but it was over in minutes. We were told our hospital worked on a 1% chance of MC with an amnio and a 2% chance of MC with the CVS.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you the very best of luck.

I had bloods doen at 16 weeks and they coem back with down's risk of 1:3. I had amniocetesis done and choromosomes were fine. I had also high hcg and low proteins. All the four levels they measured were way too low or high. I got pre-enclampsia later on my pregnancy. This blood results might have been an early indication that placenta is not working properly. But you newver know.

The risk of miscarriage your midwife told you could be value how often miscarriage happens in your hospital. It can be lower than the national one.

Witter1978 · 27/06/2012 16:38

MsBump They gave me a 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage which I was comfortable with. Most of the risk is during the actual procedure. Have a good chat with your consultant beforehand to reassure yourself. xxx

mrsbump I knw exactly how you're feeling, I had a great nt measurement 1.3 but when my bloods were added in my overall risks of ds went up to 1:36. Basically like you my bloods had either too much or too little I can't remember exactly what! I didnt want an amnio as I'd had 3 miscarriages but I also had to know what if anything we were facing. In the end I decided on an amnio but I chose to go private with the leading consultant in the area ( his loss rate is 1 in 300). He also explained that the rick of mc was no higher in me despite my history as the risk following amnio is if contractions start or heavy bleeding experienced. I have to say the procedure was uncomfortable but not painful and I did ache for a day afterwards. However my results came back all clear and I'm now 32 weeks. You will hear loads of stories of people with awful odds with happy endings but in the end you have to do what feels best for you. All the best and I hope everything is ok.
