Does she need vests?

I am due end of October, so weather is likely to be cold. I thought the baby would need long sleeved suits with vests underneath for the first three mints or so, but the assistant in Mamas & Pappas said I didn't need vests, just some long sleeved sleepsuits??

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'd get vests definitely.

gingerchick · 26/06/2012 10:06

You will need vests but probably only short sleeved ones, vest, babygro/outfit, cardy

savoycabbage · 26/06/2012 10:08

I like a vest myself. Mine always wore them all year round. You want them to be as cosy and comfortable as possible, especially at 3am.

gymboywalton · 26/06/2012 10:09

yes vests

definitely
if only because they hold the nappy in place!

AThingInYourLife · 26/06/2012 10:13

Mine wore vests all year around. When it was warm then just vests.

Chunkychicken · 26/06/2012 10:56

The popper-bottomed short-sleeved vests are def necessary in Oct, a longer sleeve for when its particularly cold later on. They also help to keep the nappy 'in place'. I always put my DD in a vest with babygro/t-shirt/outfit over the top, even now when she's 2yo. I only left it off it was exceptionally hot, or only put that on, as AThing said.

Cheekychops84 · 26/06/2012 11:06

Yep deff vests mine are all July/aug babys and still wore vests unless of course it was really hot then they would wear a vest only and no sleepsuit so in Oct u deff need vests!

PurplePidjin · 26/06/2012 11:20

Afaik (due in December) babies need one more layer than adults. So if you're indoors wearing trousers and t shirt, baby needs vest, trousers and t shirt. If you get chilly and put on a jumper, baby needs one too - but still with the extra layer on top of what you need.

I'll be buying long sleeved, short sleeved and sleep suits just in case! At £7 for 7 or whatever they are in the supermarket, I'd rather have them and not need them iyswim :)

ShhhhhGoBackToSleep · 26/06/2012 11:24

Shop assistant is clueless! Babies need one more layer than you, so if you would be waundering around topless in October.... Wink

My newborn DD (DC2) is dressed today in a long sleeved sleep suit, short sleeved vest and little cardie over the top as she felt chilly. Long sleeved vests can be a bit of a bugger to sort the sleeves out on when when are teeny hence the short sleeves and then cardie.

Sastra · 26/06/2012 11:34

Argh!!!! So hang on: when I say vest I mean something that looks like a swimming costume - with a sleepsuit over the top. Do I need those ones that look like t-shirts (short sleved) and the ones that loo k like long sleeved t-shirts UNDER the sleep suit if it's cold?

Oh bloody hell, I am feeling very overwhelmed and incompetent Sad

Yes, vests are the little 'swimming costume ones' but come in 3 varieties; sleeveless, short-sleeved & long-sleeved.

Sleepsuit = babygro, onesie, jumpsuit type thing.

You don't need anything else under the babygro - vest + babygro + cardigan (if nec) will be sufficient. Get a packet of short-sleeve white vests in first size from Asda/Tesco. Nothing else more complicated needed!! :-)

WandaDoff · 26/06/2012 13:56

Asda popper vests - £2.50 for 3. Can't go wrong with them.

fatboyslimmum · 26/06/2012 13:58

you need some of this style vest here

and then some of these

and a couple of little cardis

that's it really

Sastra · 26/06/2012 15:14

Thank you so much. God, if I'm finding this a struggle, I dread to think what's coming...!

I only know this because I've done it twice before.

The only reason I had any vests when DD1 was born is because someone gad given them to me :o

You'll be fine, honestly. :)
