Got home from work tonight to a voicemail from the midwife stating that the blood I gave on thursday the results have came back and my blood sugar levels are quite high. She wants to know if I had anything to eat or drink 2 hours prior to the appointment. The appointment was at 8:45 I only drank water before.
Super worried what could this mean?

Don't want to leave you without a response. I had one high sugar reading but I had eaten two cupcakes that morning so not so concerning (to me at least!).

I wouldn't panic, call the midwife back as soon as you can and have a chat. You may need to do a glucose challenge to rule in/out gestational diabetes. And from what I know of friends with the condition, it's a total pain but manageable, and as long as you're monitored and managing the condition you and baby will be fine.

wunnybunny · 25/06/2012 21:05

phone her back high blood sugar levels is a sign of Diabetes you need to get this checked

reeta30 · 25/06/2012 21:06

Yeah, she just wants to check for gestational diabetes. I had to go for glucose test in hospital (in the day unit, only took a morning) after a high blood sugar test. Turned out all was fine and I didn't have diabetes. You'll probably be asked to go for another test to double check. Try not to worry!

sleepybump · 25/06/2012 21:11

A note on the tests they might want to do to follow this up:

I had a test where you eat nothing from midnight the night before the blood test as a matter of course as there is diabetes in my family (well, just my gran who got it in her old age!). I guess they'll just do this with you to check ... there is another test which is something to do with starving from midnight/blood test in morning/ then drink (horrid) glucose solution/wait two hours/another test ...they may want to do this with you as it's more difinitive. (but bloody long winded if you already have LOs to keep entertained!)

Either way it's definately best to get it checked juuuust incase!

Thanks everyone, medical centre is now closed so I need to wait worrying until the morning. Sleepybump My gran also had diabetes which worries me more. What was your results if you dont mind me asking?
I know google is not my friend for these kind of things but have been reading that it can increase birth defects and still born!
How quickly do you get the second set of results?

Hi mummyfirsttime I did the drinking sugar test with my dd and it turned out I had gestational diabetes although we have none in our family. But don't worry - I was given lots of advice and a strict diet which was a pain, but in the end was very manageable and my sugar levels evened out straight away. I live in France and I think the diet may be stricter here but it was basically eating at set times, not eating fruit with meals, not eating cake etc :( and no fruit juice at all. I had to eat a certain amount of rice/pasta at each meal and as many veg as I wanted so actually I was never hungry outside meals which worried me since I'm always hungry :)
So, even if you do have it, which is not sure, you can handle it!
And... STEP AWAY FROM THE GOOGLE!

mummyfirsttime · 27/06/2012 17:44

Thank you sleepy78, went for appointment with midwife today and done the fasting glucose test. Had loads of blood taken before and after. My last result was 5.9 and should have been 5.1 so slightly higher than usual. Results tomorrow morning so fingers crossed all ok. Midwife did not seem that concerned not sure if that makes me feel better or not. X

How did it go, mummyfirsttime?

mummyfirsttime · 28/06/2012 20:28

Hi Sleepy78, well it has been a nightmare. I called to get the results this morning and was told after a long arguement with the receptionist (she said there was no way my results could have been in yet although midwife had advised me to call to find out) that the midwifehad said they were normal i that I do not need to do anything further.

I come home from work pick up the house phone for my partner to say dont listen to the message yet. The midwife had called him as she couldnt get through to me to say that the results where still quite high and that the diabetic nurse wants to monitor me weekly! So annoyed and worry about the so called care I recieve. Because they left it so late to call back i now have to wait until tomorrow to find out what all this means.

What started off a good day has ended rotten!

Hi, try not to worry too much, I just wanted to say I'm diabetic and had a healthy baby 11 weeks ago Grin he was a bit early but lots of babies are born early to mums with perfect medical histories, fingers crossed they sort everything out tomorrow and don't mess you about any more Smile

mummyfirsttime · 28/06/2012 20:45

Aww elliebug thats great news congratulations! If you dont mind me asking what kind of birth did you have i have been reading that you are more likely to have a bigger baby 10lbs+ and are more at risk of having to have a c section.
I planned to have a water birth but now thinking this may not be possible. I know that doesnt really matter as long as the baby is healthy however I would like to feel I have a little control :)

Poor thing - really, don't worry, it'll be fine either way - it's just horrible not knowing (I'm an awful one for worrying too!) Try to do something nice to take your mind of it this evening - hopefully they'll sort themselves out tomorrow...
If it helps, I was induced because dd was overdue - no early baby here!
If you feel worried, just start to watch what you eat a bit, following the guidelines I told you before. That's all they'll tell you to do anyway, unless your blood sugar is REALLY high, but it doesn't sound like it is.

Babylon1 · 28/06/2012 20:47

I had same, but had eaten a whole big bag few haribos just before I had bloods done Blush

Try not to worry Smile

elliebug · 28/06/2012 20:55

Well, this might not help but, I had an emergency section for reduced movement but nothing suggests this was diabetes related, placenta looked really healthy apparently! Smile he was 6lb9 at 35 weeks so would have been big If he'd waited! My blood sugars were really good in pregnancy, maybe I just make big babies, there is a website diabetessuport.co.uk can't link as on phone but there are lots of knowledgable people on there who are really supportive had have prob been through it before

mummyfirsttime · 28/06/2012 20:55

Sleepy78 I am definately going to follow those food guidelines no matter what is said tomorrow better safe than sorry as they say however i dont feel that my diet is that bad however Babylon1 the odd bag of haribo does sneek in sometimes but not before my GTT.

I just wish it was tomorrow already! x
