Hyperemesis - in more than one pregnancy?

For those of you that suffered with hyperemesis, did you suffer with it in all pregnancies?

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm pregnant again (DS is only 13 weeks!!) and a bit worried as I was being sick all the way through my last pregnancy, and ended up induced 2 weeks early because of it, after spending 3 weeks in hospital on a drip. Would hate to go through all that again.

Had it midly in pregnancy number 2 ds

Just had normal nausea with pregnancy number 1 dd....hence second pregnancy Grin

If I had had hyperemisis first time around there would have been no ds!

I've had hyperemesis in both pregnancies. Which is why I have a 3 1/2 year gap between my kids. Waited until ds1 started to go to playschool before I got pregnant incase I had it again, which was lucky as I did. Good news though was that I felt better able to cope with it 2nd time around. Alhtough there were a lot of days where ds1 was plonked in front of cbeebies whilst I lay on the sofa with my bowl.

Ditto what white said.

I didn't have it in my first although I was sick a lot, do have it in my second and this will be my last pregnancy, mostly due to age but definitely due to HG.

I am in awe of women who have it then go into have subsequent pregnancies.

Have you tested yet? If you are pregnant, I'm sending all positive vibes for a non HG pregnancy to you!

had it with both. manageable with careful diet/strict eating schedules in the first, only once a day or so throughout. with pregnancy two it was vaguely managed by medication, careful diet (of virtually nothing)/avoiding certain smells (garlic and ginger) and cleaning with dettol (eased nausea, honestly it did! my house was very very clean). continued to vomit between 1-3 times a day throughout even with this management.

Sorry, you did not want to hear that.

However, I did read an article once which suggested that babies whose mothers suffered from HG were super clever Grin

I'm still only 16 weeks with my first delightful hyperemesis experience (STILL in bed) so can't say for sure but I had two v. early losses earlier this year at 4 and 5 weeks and I was already really sick by the time I lost them. With this one I was first admitted to hospital at the end of week 5 and I'm sure those two other pregnancies were going the same way, even though they weren't viable.

My mother had it with all five (!) successful pregnancies plus a few losses and my sister with all three plus a couple of losses so I think I am doomed. It does worry me as I have always wanted more than one but the thought of voluntarily going through this again is daunting.

There is a theory that it correlates with high fertility. I conceived three months in a row (Jan, Feb and March, lost the first two) and the Jan conception was our first week trying! So I am definitely going to be v. careful with contraception after the baby is born. Realise that's not very helpful for you right now. Have you done a test? Though I have to say all three times my nausea started nearly a fortnight before a positive test (i.e. almost immediately).

kalidasa · 24/06/2012 21:29

Pavlov loving the high intelligence theory! There's got to be something it's good for . . .

Happydogsaddog · 24/06/2012 21:30

I had hyperemesis in 1st and 3rd pregnancies, (girl and boy) with 2nd I was convinced it was a boy as pregnancy went so smoothly but sure enough DD2 was born a girl (sorry that is to say I don't think there's a connection between gender and HG)

I was hospitalised from 7wks with DS, I thought I was much further along but an internal scan revealed I was very early in and unfortunately very ill Sad I considered the implications of going to term with HG and two v.small babies (DD1 would've been 16mo and DD2 4mo) but nevertheless I proceeded with the pregnancy and with Stematil and minimal admissions made it to the end, if I was faced with the same dilemma again, I don't know if I could face it, I say this honestly and frankly. Hth

kalidasa throwing up after taking a mouthful of good wine with a lovely meal I did not fancy is how I knew, 10 days post ovulation, way before I could test Grin, i did not stop throwing up til DS arrived 10 days late. that was a looooong pregnancy Grin but, with DD I did not start throwing up til 6wks.

kalidasa · 24/06/2012 21:42

My nausea started 48 hours after conception every single time. Three months in a row, we thought we were going crazy! I didn't actually throw up till week 5 but had close calls/retching from week 4 and when the vomiting started it got completely out of control immediately. Despite all the drugs I am still throwing up every day and still stuck in bed most days. Really hoping I will at least be able to get up and function soonish even if the vomiting carries on.

Sorry empusa these anecdotes are probably not helping you at all.

Empusa · 24/06/2012 22:28

I started being sick about 7 weeks in last time - I was on the pill so we just thought it was some kind of virus Confused

So.. 2 out of 3 had hyperemesis in first and subsequent pregnancies.. that's not too promising is it?

My last period was about 6 weeks ago, but seeing as I only gave birth 13 weeks ago and I have PCOS, I've no idea if this is a sign or not! But my boobs have grown massively since I bought my last bra (3 weeks ago!) despite the fact I am actually losing weight, and I've had a huge amount of discharge (sorry, TMI!) which I had all through the last pregnancy.

No nausea/vomiting yet though..

I had it in both (both girls- not sure that makes a difference)

DD1 till 20 weeks
DD2 till 22 weeks

we left a 5 year gap between the 2. I'd let myself forget (a bit) how bad it can be. Plus looking after a toddler would have been impossible whilst being that sick.

insancerre · 25/06/2012 17:04

I had it with both DS and DD till 20+ weeks.

insancerre · 25/06/2012 17:04

oh and there is 7 years between them

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 25/06/2012 17:12

Watching with interest as I only have 1 DC so far

GizzyBoo · 25/06/2012 17:27

DC1 - I was sick....a couple of times a day every day....Felt rotten
DC2 - I was again sick on a regular basis but the low level nausea wasnt nearly as bad.
DC3 - it was horrendous. I was constantly sick. In and out of hospital and on some days struggled to lift my head from my pillow. Couldn't eat or drink for weeks. Hated it.

.......Hence the almost 10 year gap to number 4!!

DC4 - Mild/moderate nausea every day from 5-10 weeks. Sick only a handful of times in total. It was by far my easiest of the 4. Am now 25 weeks and the sickness was gone completely by 11 weeks!
