My daughter in law gave birth two weeks ago and this was her second strep B positive pregnancy (in her urine and vaginally).

The first time she was extremely concerned as she only received antibiotics an hour before delivery. The hospital then monitored the baby on hourly observations for the 24 hours following the birth ( I believe different hospitals follow different guidelines - 12 hours, 24 or even 48). There were no problems at all.

This time, a very pleasant consultant said that if DIL did not manage to get the abx in time (or at all) the baby would receive a dose following delivery and obs for 12 hours. It may be worth asking your midwife what your hospital or consultant's policy is.

As it happened, DIL was induced at 38 weeks and received the first dose shortly after her waters were broken. She was about to receive the next dose ( four hours later) when she delivered. Hospital still did hourly obs for 12 hours and everything was fine.

Wishing you a smooth delivery of your little one x

In my case, I had Strep B picked up in a urine sample at some point in the pregnancy so was to receive the antibiotics in labour.
I only arrived at the hospital just over an hour before DS was born. THey got one shot of antibiotics into me but then they gave him antibiotics as they hadn't got the full dose into me (not sure if they gave me more too - I did have a drip but think that was syntocin to prevent bleeding..or something).

It wasn't great having him have antibiotics (needle in the hand and all that) but it did mean I got to stay in the hospital 2 nights so he could have his doses which was kind of nice, like a mini babymoon!

P.S. this was in Ireland so not sure if policy will be the same where you are

Different hospitals seem to have different policies. There was no hope of getting anti biotics into me in time as my second labour was so fast. When DD2 came she had blood taken immediately, this took 24 hrs for the result to come through as it had to be cultured. In the meantime she had 24 hrs of 4 hrly antibiotics delivered through a cannula. The cannula was in her foot, as they could not get it in her hand.
I would ask your mw about your own hospital's policy, including your preference for obs rather than antibiotics. Check before the birth that they will accommodate it and get that in your notes rather than have discussions after (as it all happens very quickly after birth- DD2 was whisked off after her first feed).

Hi there! I was in exactly the same boat as you! I kept telling everyone that my labour would be too fast for me to have antibiotics. I went into hospital as soon as soon as I had contractions (i was a little embarrassed but it was good). Got into the birth suite... Dr came and put a canula in... me went to get antibiotics... I stood up... baby fell out...me tan back in and pressed crash button!! So anyway they did 24 hours of one for ds. Wasn't a stress or problem at all. I would just say 1. Babies rarely get b steep. 2. Go in as early as you dare. 3. Make sure people listen to you! Good luck hun. X

Have they tested you this time?

I had very quick first labour & no knowledge of my group b strep until 2 days later when the midwife visited me at home informed me. Thank goodness everything was fine & dd is now a very healthy 8 yr old.

I was tested negative for group b strep in second pregnancy & had a fantastic home birth.
