What would you say is a bump to the bump to be concerned about? How bad does it need to be before you hotfoot it to hospital to get anti-D?

I dropped my iPad right on my 21 week bump from about a 15cm height. Landed edge down. Didn't hurt.

Now my sensible head is telling me that is nothing to worry about at all and won't cause fetal bleeding. My hormone riddled brain is thinking what if it caught one of its tiny little limbs that were particularly near the edge of the sac at the time and made the poor thing bleed a bit?

But for future ref also - (just in case - I hope I won't actually need the info) how bad does a bump/knock need to before you need to have anti-D? Are we talking kick to the stomach, car crash etc or less than that?

I am neg, had 2 kids and had no idea that bumping the bump meant I needed anti d. I had anti d both pregnancies, both babies were neg also as it turns out but better safe than sorry!

I'm rhesus neg, and assumed that if it didn't hurt then it'd be ok. I know I bumped my bump a few times and DS was born absolutely fine, and he isn't rhesus negative. If you aren't sure though you could always call your midwife or NHS Direct.

If you aren't hurt the baby won't be, it would take a serious fall, something that might damage the placenta. The baby itself is very well cushioned. It is most likely that a blow that would be a worry would cause bleeding, so if you have no vaginal bleeding and no bruising, and it wasn't a heavy blow, it's unlikely to be an issue.

I'm r neg and called the hospital recently about a similar incident, i fell pretty hard into the corner of a table, they said if there's no red mark on the skin it should be fine but any blood/water discharge then go in straight away. Hope this helps x

Hello, sorry to hijack but just wondering if anyone can advise . . . I'm rh-neg and don't remember having the anti-d jab after ds was born 3 years ago. Should I have had it or would it only have been given if he was rh-pos? I don't know his blood group and can't find it in his red book. Am now (just) pg with #2 and wondering if it could affect things if I didn't have the anti-d jab??? Thanks

Agree with the posters about bleeding. I clattered down the stairs when I was about 4/5 months pregnant. The midwife did a heartbeat check for me but said if I'd had any major bruising that would suggest bleeding that I would need to go to hospital.

DD jumped onto my tummy the other day with quite a force and so went up to Hospital just on safe side and they listened to heart beat and they decided on giving me anti D to be safe and told me to come back if any bleeding etc. they reassured me always better to be safe than sorry. HTHs
