second pregnancy.... how different from first?

Found out two days ago that pregnant with my second.

I am sitting here at the dining table, just navel gazing, feeling utterly over-the-moon, that another child will be joining us.

But reality is settiling in. I had a super easy first pregnancy. Mild nausea completely stopped at 12 weeks and then I really loved pregnancy, my DH has kept the emails I sent him whilst pregnant, as they are so ridiculously positive, happy, ott and loved-up. I am fully prepared for this pregnancy to be different. Very different. Indeed, my first full day of pregnancy was yesterday, and they way I hauled, ran, grabbed and lunged after my toddler, was more strenuous than my total 9 month of pregnancy last time!

Anyway, sorry for the waffle. Pls could you tell me how your second pregnancy was different or the same from your first. Spare me no gory details!

Thanks

18 weeks with DC2 and, so far, this pregnancy has been very different to my first, much easier, so much so I still often forget that I'm pregnant! Very few symptoms this time - unlike with DD.

Pootle78 · 23/06/2012 09:49

35 weeks here with number 2 and never want to be pregnant again!!!

EMS23 · 23/06/2012 09:57

28 weeks with DC2. DC1 is 19 months.

Had sickness this time, none at all last time.
Feel huge and uncomfortable, felt fab last time. But weirdly, have put on less weight, my bump is just bigger.
It's flying by. I forget I'm pregnant most days and have to keep checking my calendar to see how far along I am.
Barely seen midwife etc.. They really leave you to it 2nd time round.
Worrying more about labour after a difficult first birth.
Worrying lots about the first few months which I found horrendous but also feeling more confident I'll survive as I did it before.
Laugh when people (especially DH) tell me not to carry stuff which weighs less than my DD, who I regularly carry!
Lots more kicks and hip pain which I guess is differences in position of baby and placenta.
Much much more tired due to hip pain and teething DD.
Very lax on 'the rules' this time - foods to avoid etc..

Congratulations!

I had a very smooth, easy 1st pregnancy, my second wasn't. Nothing really bad, it was just really hard going. What might have been easily solved by a good lay in, couldn't be. Very hard to rest with a toddler!

jessebuni · 23/06/2012 12:37

Mine has been the complete opposite.

DS1 was easy, no nausea, no niggles of any kind until 34+ weeks when my hips started aching and heartburn was bad and i was generally fed up from then on. Baby's head engaged nice and early, I was 3cm dilated at 38 weeks, went into labour the night before my due date and had my son at 00.47am ON his due date after a 4 hour completely natural no pain relief labour.

This pregnancy, I've had morning sickness the ENTIRE way through and heartburn from the start probably made worse by the morning sickness. I've been badly anaemic and also had severe SPD since 20 weeks. I'm now nearly 42 weeks and despite having 4 attempted sweeps I'm still only 1cm and no baby! I'm booked in for induction on tuesday. So basically compared to last time nothing has been the same it's been miles worse on top of coping with a hyperactive toddler.

scarlettsmummy2 · 23/06/2012 12:57

Second pregnancy much easier! No sickness at all. Birth also much easier, breast feeding no bother and lost all baby weight in 12 weeks. I've been very lucky.

abbypumpkin · 23/06/2012 13:57

First
Sickness until week 15
Bit of backache on and off
Indigestion for a couple of days around 35 weeks

Second
Terrible 24 hr sickness until week 11
Indigestion throughout
Extreme tiredness throughout
Spd - extreme hip pain from 13 weeks ( now can't walk)
Really uncomfortable like I'm going to pop
Swollen hands
Cramps from 24 weeks
Unable to sleep
No patience, really irritable and feel quite depressed
Can't think straight (set kitchen on fire last week!)
Developed anaemia
Painful breasts
Dizzy spells
Shoes don't fit

DameFlatYouLent · 23/06/2012 14:23

No gigantic differences for me. My pelvic floor feels decidedly weaker though, and my bits ache all the time, and feel like they're bowing outwards (sorry if tmi).

Generally tireder and achier, but that's because I'm running after a 19mo DS! Oh and tummy much bigger. Worried about how big i'm going to get, in fact - at 24wks I'm about the size I was at 30wks last time Confused

Also petrified about first few months after really struggling last time. But as EMS says, I know I can survive....!

Benaberry · 23/06/2012 15:25

First time around (DS1 now 5.5) had no sickness and minimal nausea. However, had awful bone aching tiredness right the way through (never did get that "burst" of energy in the 2nd trimester that everyone talked about!), and my back and hips/pelvis were really painful from about 5 months. Also had three scary bleeding episodes before 14 weeks.

This time (now 35 weeks), more nausea and a couple of bouts of sickness, very tired early on but it did go for 2nd trimester, although back with a vengeance now. Back and pelvis painful, but not until much later on, not sure if because i've invested this time in a big v-pillow and sleep all wrapped around it! No bleeding either this time.

Although I've had more health issues this time around, high blood pressure etc, they've all turned out to be unrelated to pregnancy and instead all something to do with a particularly nasty sinus infection I had a few months ago that resulted in time in hospital on i/v antibiotics and some rather yucky complications. Only frustrating thing was the limited options for treatment due to pregnancy; without these issues, on the whole I'd have actually been much better this time around, and that's with being 5 years older, having a boisterous 5-year-old to run after, a much more stressful job and studying part time for a masters on top...

Congratulations!

Puffykins · 23/06/2012 18:26

First pregnancy was as easy as pie, followed by a very easy birth. This pregnancy has been MUCH harder. Horrible skin, pain in my pelvis, nausea throughout first and second trimester, chronic haemeroidhs, recurring thrush, indigestion, severe anaemia...... I'm nearly 39 weeks, and DESPERATE for it to be over. I'm actually having mild contractions at the moment and just hope that they progress and don't just fade away. I just need to get home from Sainsbury's first.....

Goldrill · 24/06/2012 15:34

First time no problems at all - barely knew I was pregnant, worked in a fairly physical job till just after she was due and didn't cut the pace till a couple of weeks before that.

DD2 is on way - 24 weeks and it's bloody awful! Got a slipped disc between pregnancies, which hasn't helped but just feel really knackered and run dow the whole time. Also not helped by 19mo DD being at nursery and contracting every bug going - and passing them all on to me! Back hurts, tummy ligaments hurt, I feel out of breath walking up anything at all and am just generally a big ball of knackered achiness.

Am also somewhat worried about the state of my pelvic floor as it appears to have evaporated and it feels like baby is being held in place with optimism at the moment!

Good luck puffykins!!!

First time I was much slimmer and fitter, easy pregnancy had to be induced but no problems. Then I broke my foot when DS! was 6 months old and it has never healed properly so ended up putting on loads of weight and am much less fit. Now 13 weeks with DC2 and have lots of nausea (which never did before) and bone-achingly tired in the afternoons...

Puffy did you make it home from Sainsbury's?

ArtyJennie · 24/06/2012 17:49

Both times have been pretty hideous- 2nd a bit worse

DD1. Hyperemesis till 20 weeks. Ridiculously tired throughout. thrust twice. A bit depressed by it all. Giving birth gave me piles (lovely)

This time. Hyperemesis till 22 weeks. Same tiredness- but no sleep ins (DD1 sees to that). Piles have just re appeared (31weeks). Cant get rid of the thrush. mild/moderate SPD. miserable!

I'm just hoping birth might be a bit quicker/easier.

This thread probably isn't making you feel to reassured- sorry!

ArtyJennie · 24/06/2012 17:50

oh yeah- and i'm much more scared of giving birth this time as i know whats coming!!

Elpis · 24/06/2012 19:17

Last time: threw up four times during first trimester, recurring thrush, but frankly otherwise a breeze. Labour a nightmare.

This time (25 weeks): never threw up but constantly nauseous until 13 weeks, then did nine-mile hike. Constant anxiety about scans, coping, etc. Now my pelvis feels incredibly weak every other day and I hate, hate standing. Ho hum.

Puffykins · 24/06/2012 21:54

Yes I made it home from Sainsbury's - sadly the contractions went away again. I'm still incubating. LONGING for this to be over.... Good luck to all of you still waiting!

MrClaypole · 24/06/2012 22:10

I recently had DS2 and my 2 pregnancies could not have been more different!

DS1:
Nauseous for 12 weeks then felt fantastic.
Enormous bump
DS1 arrived at 40+4. 12 hour spontaneous labour with epidural ending in ventouse delivery

DS2
Heavy bleeding for first 12 weeks, lots of trips to EPU for scans to rule out miscarriage
SEVERE nausea for 24 weeks, wore off a bit after that
First 24 weeks under care of premature baby clinic due to some of cervix being removed. Lots of scans.
PGP from 12 weeks, bloody painful
Obstetric Cholastasis diagnosed at 32 weeks, never felt so ill, I was yellow from liver not functioning properly and itched like mad
Induced at 36 weeks due to OC not being under control and risk to baby.
DS2 in NICU for 5 days and hospital for ages after

So in short, DS1 a dream pregnancy and DS2 a nightmare. I'm not having any more!!

abigboydidit · 24/06/2012 22:55

So - DS I had nausea (but never vomited) daily from about 6 weeks till edging towards 5 months, where it gradually slowed and stopped. It was isolated to evenings only though (from about 4/5pm-ish). During the day I felt hungry and had to constantly graze and only wanted bland, stodgy foods (white bread and cheap sausages) but it was totally manageable. Consumed cans and cans of fizzy juice (esp diet cola) which got me through. Evening nausea often (but not always) put me off my dinner and could last from 1 hour to all night.

Currently only 9 weeks pregnant with DC2 and am close to tears with it already! Since 5 weeks I have constant waves of nausea through the day. Find it very hard to take any fluids - will manage a couple gulps of iced water and then it turns my stomach..so a few hours later I'll manage to have a couple gulps iced OJ watered down and then that starts to make me feel sick..so I'll wait a few hours and manage an inch of milk.. Have had to lie at work to escape and lie in my car waiting for the nausea to pass enough to cope with my job! Hideous. Am hoping it is just condensed into 12 weeks instead of 5 months and that I'll wake up at 12 weeks feeling like a new woman.

I am nothing if not deluded..
