Sumatriptan and BFP

Hi,

I'll try to be brief. I tried for a late baby at the age of 43 and unfortunately although i did manage 2 X BFP they both ended in MCs (most likely due to my age.)

That was 2 years ago and despite using no contraception and having sex around ovulation every month i have had no further positive HPTs. we have now stopped actively trying to get pregnant but have not used contaception and would be happy with a late BFP despite it being unlikely.

I have suffered with migraine on and off for all of my adult life and recently I have been getting migraines which start with a vertigo attack. My doctor has said for me to take Sumatriptan as soon as I have the vertigo feeling and it should head off the migraine.

The headaches do tend to be during the first 2 weeks of my cycle (especially when my waking temperature is low - can't get out of the habit of charting!)

So my question is:- if i take the odd one or two of these tablets and then miraculaously get a BFP would it be potentially harmful?

(I know i should have asked the GP this but i actually felt a numpty for even suggesting a BFP at my age and after so long without one - 45!)

Thanks. X

Sorry no help at all, but I would bite the bullet and ask the GP, especially given your history - I don't think s/he will think you're a numpty at all Smile

I take these and would not trust them when ttc or pg, they are really good and nothing shifts a migraine like they do but I don't think it's worth the risk, I usually only take them during the first 2 weeks of my cycle if I really need to even though like you I get migraine more in the last 2 weeks :( I would speak to your GP though they may tell you it is fine to take them I just choose not to. And I agree with marble the GP won't think you are a numpty :) good luck x

Thanks guys. Yes, i know I should probably ask him- he's a lovely bloke but a bit old fashioned and i had vision of him saying, "A baby at 45 - get away with you woman!"

I will ask him though if you think it's best.

Yes, but Hippy, you're not starting at 45 are you? You have had history and it's ok to hold out some hope, until the red lady squawks her last, and I think, he will understand that, as it's not that long ago since your mc's. He might state that he thinks it's unlikely, but I'm sure he won't be laughing at you for it. At least if you ask him, you know, and then should the happy event occur, you will rest easier Smile

Hippy I was taking Sumatriptan when I got my BFP!!!

I was having such incredible headaches that the docs put me straight on them as it was affecting all parts of my life...........low and behold it turns out the reason my migrains became so severe was because of the daily increase in hormones that I was producing as I was in fact 6wks pregnant. I'm having to keep my fingers crossed that all is OK, I've got my 12wk scan next friday so fingers crossed!!

Needless to say the doc took me off them straight away and prescribed Co-Codamol as a 'just in case I couldn't cope' type of pain relief.

Sorry I'm not much help.........but I'm in that boat!

xx

stormbird - good luck for the scan. Hoping all goes well for you with the pregnancy.

missingmymarbles - you are right of course. If he did say something rude about the possibility of a baby in my 40s i could always come back with my two pregnancies at 43 - but as you say, he probably wouldn't be that rude.

Thanks all X
