Melsy. Only discovered my nut allergy 3 years ago after having dd1. Totally out of the blue. Yes its hell living with a nut allergy but at least its me not my kids. Technically I should avoid all tree nuts (but am fine to eat peanuts) but only become neurotic during pregnancy. Firstly because of the possibility of the little getting a nut allergy but also because anaphaltic shock would kill the little one. wish they'd come out with more alternatives. Most places lump the alternatives into one product. For instance Christmas pudding. I could only have the nut, wheat, and everything else free version - Yuck!

Regarding the decision to give up peanut butter in pregnancy: generally speaking I haven't been over strict about all the things you're not supposed to eat (prawns, brie, etc) and the peanut thing is not fully researched and understood yet, but I asked my GP what she thought. She obviously didn't have an opinion on it, but then said " well, do you HAVE to eat peanuts?" and I felt like a total brat for insisting on wanting to eat peanuts, when I could easily give them up for 9 months (plus 6 for bf). Also the advicce is to avoid peanuts if either you or partner have any allergies, and bloody old dh has hayfever. I think the thought of my child having anaphylactic shock and me not being able to do anything kind of horrified me, even though it's a tiny tiny chance.
What I've read definitely says only peanuts, you are positively encouarged to eat other nuts..unless you have your own nut allergy of course.
Back to the subject of substitutes, at the beginning of ny pregnancy when I was really sick and didn't know what to eat, my dh went into town specially to get me almond butter from Fresh and Wild, but it separates and gets an oily layer and looks unappetising, so now it's just languishing in the cupboard, and when he sees it, he makes me feel guilty about it!

OK, I have hay fever and asthma and also thought I should avoid peanut butter in my first pregnancy. I managed to get soynut butter in North America, but couldn't get it in Ireland. It tastes much the same.
But as it happens I think I did go back to eating it when nursing... and gave it to ds well before he was 2 and he hasn't had any allergies (knock wood.)
Not sure if you absolutely have to avoid it... try to get the soynut stuff though at a health food store if it will set your mind at rest!
