Am 34 + 2 today and just had growth scan.

Head is measuring 37 + 3 weeks
Stomach is off the scale, they couldn't get a true measurement so have said 40 weeks
Legs measuring 33 + 2

Predicted current weight 6lb 11!!!!!!

Blood pressure and urine fine, had blood tests today to rule out diabetes (gtt fine) infection and anything else.

Not worried at the moment, got to go back for another scan in 3 weeks, consultant appointment in 4 weeks to decide what will happen

Has anyone else had this and then went on to have a natural labour and not too big a baby?

This is no 2, ds was 8lb 9oz so was expecting a 9lber but now slightly concerned I'll be giving birth to a weeble in 6 weeks!!!

Hasn't happened to me personally, but one of my friends was told baby was 7lb at 36 weeks, baby was born at 40 weeks weighing 7lb 13oz, so not the 9lb that was predicted. Another friend had a baby 3 weeks ago at 37 +4, at her 35 week scan she was told baby was already 8lb 6 oz. He was 7lb 5oz when he was born!

RillaBlythe · 20/06/2012 14:01

My friend was told at 37 week scan the baby was 8 lb already. He was born at 40w weighing 7.5 lbs.

HappyCamel · 20/06/2012 14:04

I was told dd would be 8lb plus at my 34 week scan (due to GD). She was born at 39 weeks weighing 6lb 2oz, they are bollocks estimates.

drjohnsonscat · 20/06/2012 14:05

I had a growth scan at about 32 weeks that said big baby (I wasn't surprised - we do that in my family). Also head off the scale (as is mine).

Sure enough DD was born at 35 weeks (waters broke spontaneously) at
7lb 12 so she would have been a whopper at term. Her brother born at 38 weeks was 9lb 6oz. Cousins born at term mainly around the 10lb mark.

Can't really answer the other questions because I didn't go to term with either and had CS both times (with first one I scheduled a CS at 39weeks because of predicted size and head size - when waters broke at 35 weeks but didn't go into labour, I had the CS anyway; with second one had scheduled CS due to predicted size and previous CS and this was also brought forward slightly for other medical reasons).

I had one at 36 weeks I think and DS showed up as 8lb then (with extra large head - joy!). I think they predicted he would be 9.5lb. He was born a couple of days before his due date (induced because of pre-eclampsia and his size) and was 9lb 11oz.

So they weren't far off but I was told that the differences between the measurements are so small that it's easy to get it wrong.

From what I've heard since, a big baby isn't necessarily going to mean a more difficult birth. My birth was difficult but my best friend had a baby over 1lb lighter and had loads more stitches than I did.

This doesn't mean I'm not hoping for a more normal sized one next time though!

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 20/06/2012 14:09

I was told at 36 weeks that my baby was 8lbs so would be at least 9 at birth.

She went about a week over, and was 7lbs 4 oz.

15 yrs ago though so don't know how accurate they are these days.

MrClaypole · 20/06/2012 14:17

Had growth scans for both of mine as were measuring big all the way through pregnancy.

DS1 was predicted 9lb7oz, was 9lb10oz at 40+4
DS2 was predicted 10lb, was 8lb at 36+0

Great births though, DS1 was 12 hour spontaneous labour but did need a ventouse to get the big fat weeble out - he had a massive head!

DS2 was induced at 36+0 had a 57 minute labour on one boiled sweet before he popped out on the 2nd push.

Don't worry, size of baby does not relate to how easy/hard the birth is. Some people have real probs with their little 6 and 7 pounders! My Dr said they induce at 40 weeks for a big baby so that may be offered to you.

I had extra scans at 28 and 34 weeks where i was told I was measuring big. The midwife also said I was measuring big. At my 38 week scan I was told the baby was now normal size and weighed approx 8lb 2. She was born at 40 + 4 weighing 7lb 11 after a a relatively straightforward birth!

Pootle78 · 20/06/2012 15:45

Glad to hear some positive stories. We do "do" big babies in our family, I was 9lb 15.5 so I was expecting a bit of a chunk! It's just the consultant mentioned issues with getting shoulders out if it is huge, will have to see what they say in 4 weeks. Thanks everyone!

I had a scan at 32 weeks and was told ds was just under 6 pounds and was tolf he would be an 11 pounder and to not bother with nb clothes.
Queue me taking most nb clothes back. DS was 6 pound 13 oz and was in nb clothes til 3 months!

I was told in my first pregnancy, at 8 months, that it was a very big baby, 8 pounds already, and would grow a lot in the next few weeks. I went home terrified. She was born a month later and weighed 7 pounds.

14 weeks into my second pregnancy, the midwife thought my dates were wrong because she said that I shouldn't have a bump, but I did, just a little one. I was sent for a scan the next day, because they thought I was having twins. The scan showed one average sized baby. She was born about a week early, weighing 6 pounds 4 ounces. Confused

jessebuni · 20/06/2012 16:13

DON'T panic! Take it all with a pinch of salt. Growth scans say to allow 2lb either side for inaccuracy. I was told at 33 weeks from a growth scan that my baby was measuring 6lb5 and would be over 10lbs (first baby!!! i was petrified!) so i had wanted a home birth and they told me no i'd have to have a hospital birth because he was probably going to be too big for a natural first birth. he was 8lbs! Not exactly small for a first baby but definitely not the 10lbs+ baby they'd be telling me I was having.

In fact my local doctors and hospital no longer even does a growth scan when you're measuring big for your dates because it's wrong so often and there isn't anything they can do about it anyway.

You might have a huge baby but you also might not so don't panic until you get there!

mrsshears · 20/06/2012 16:38

I do agree that they can get this wrong but i would also like to tell you my story.
My dd3 was born 2 weeks ago, all through the pregnancy we were told to expect a big baby, which was no surprise as my other 2 dd's were 9lb and 9 and a half pounds, i measured between 4-6 weeks over my dates in the last trimester and was huge, i was eventually sent for a growth scan at a few days past my due date and the predicted weight was 11lb.
We were then sent to see the consultant who advised that i have a section the following day, due to the size of the baby and my size they didn't feel a natural delivery would be possible, myself and dh agreed to this.
Sure enough when we had the section the following day dd was 10lb 12 1/2 0z and 59cm long and had her arm above her head, we were so pleased we listened to the advice we were given as if i had pushed for a natural birth i really don't know what might have happened.
I suppose what i'm trying to say is they do get it wrong but not always.

Pootle78 · 20/06/2012 17:12

Congratulations Mrs Shears , blimey that was accurate!

The thing is, I'm not measuring big from midwife checks, it's cause I have a bmi of 35 they sent me to consultant and this appointment has been booked since I was 16 weeks when they had no idea what size I may be!

Oh well fingers crossed, but as you say jesse if it's 2lb either way I hope mine isn't the "under"!

On the other side of the coin; having had a 9lb 8 first baby my sister was told her 2nd was going to be smaller and not too worry as he wouldn't be more than 8lbs. He was 10lb 10 when he was born! Luckily all went fine and she said his head was smaller than ds1 which made it an easier birth.

Chocchip88 · 20/06/2012 20:32

I'm 32 weeks and just been told my baby is 6lbs already. They are going to scan me again in 4 weeks. Gulp. Will read with interest!

joosiewoosie · 20/06/2012 20:55

At my 36 wk midwife appointment last week, I measured 42cm. I had a growth scan following day, where baby was estimated to weigh 8lb 10oz at that point. I've a consultant appointment next week and am eager to find out the advice. I don't fancy squeezing a 11lb + baby out!
