Pelvic girdle pain!?

I am 9 weeks pregnant and have had terrible back pains and shooting pains in my bum and back of my legs, it is excrutiating and no matter if I'm stood up, sat down, or in bed it won't go away!

Is this pelvic girdle pain? Has anybody else experienced this or currently going through the same thing??
Please tell me it will go away!

This is my 2nd pregnancy I have a 19mo so it make it very difficult to carry or play with my DS :-(

Is there any point in going to the docs? It's not like I can have anything other than paracetomol, I've had a heat patch on my back all day and it's not helped at all

Any advise welcome! X

It could be PGP, or it could be sciatica. The pelvic partnership is a wonderful resource for PGP and has lots of info: www.pelvicpartnership.org

In any case it is definitely worth talking to the doc or MW - if it is PGP it is important to get an early referral to a physio who does manual manipulation. Any kind of severe pain should probably be checked out anyway - especially if it's constant.

Poor you :( - hope you feel better soon. Rest as much as you can and try ice if heat isn't working.

PGP is at the front generally and top inside of thighs. You sound like you have a trapped nerve or sciatica. Also, 9 weeks is very very early for PGP. Go to your GP. Osteopaths are good at helping!

I have PGP and it's mainly at the front although my back does hurt quite a lot too. Not sure if thats part of it or its me standing/sitting funny. Call your MV, they might be able to give you advice on what to do/who to see.

lollipoppi · 19/06/2012 17:31

Thank you for your replies, maybe it isn't PGP then as I've not had any pains at the front just in my back bum and legs.

I did wonder if it is possibly not pregnancy related as surely my little pea (baby) can't be putting any pressure on anything just yet!
Maybe I've just pulled it picking up my bonker of a 19mo Grin

My god it's bloody painful, if it's no better tomorrow I will get booked in at the docs or MW

Thanks again Smile

I had PGP during pregnancy and that was in my bum and down the outside side of my legs. I had ongoing physio, manual manipulation and crutches. Took ages to get the appointment so I suggest getting in there as soon as possible. Towards the end I couldn't physically get to the hospital and so my doctor had to prescribe me codeine as I couldn't walk at all without it and was home alone. Horrible horrible horrible.

Pgp isn't caused by pressure, it's your muscles responding to pregnancy hormones. It is effing painful though, you can self-refer to physio for it. Ask your midwife.

I found sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees helped. Mine lasted the whole pregnancy but disappeared almost immediately after delivery. The relief was immense.

I agree that PGP is the work of the devil (wheelchair with last 2 pregnancies from 20 weeks, crutches from 12). Fingers crossed it isn't that!

It is Pelvic Girdle Pain im afraid, it doesnt have to be at the front. I have terrible pains in my bum, and shooting pains down my legs, it kills to walk upstairs. :-( Im 24 weeks pregnant with first baby, and i ve had this problem from 6 weeks! :-( My doctor referred me to a pregnany specialst physio at my local hospital, who i see one a week.

She has diagnosed it as PGP. I have to do certain exercises at home every day. Sometimes its better than other days. My doctor also prescribed me Co-codamol 500mg for when the pain is unbearable.

I also brought a pregancy pillow (a very big v shaped pillow) this is suppose to help with PGP, and i must admit when used properly, it does work.

I know what your going through and its really painful!

The soon you get it treated, the quicker the pain goes after the birth my physio said :-)

lollipoppi · 19/06/2012 19:34

Narcolespyqueen that sounds terrible hope your ok now!
Thank you so much for your replies I think I will get booked in at my gp tomorrow just incase i do need a referral.
After just bathing my DS and putting him to bed, i am in agony Sad
I'm going to curl up on the sofa and try and find a comfortable position and stay there for the rest of the night Grin

Ahhh if only i could finish that sentence off with "and a glass of wine"

Try the pillows. And a small wine wine would be okay x

Badgerina · 19/06/2012 23:22

It does sound like PGP. I have it, similarly to you, at the back (S.I joint) and in my bum - I feel in my pelvis, right where my legs "join" at the top IYSWIM, and I'm my hip joints. I would try and get a physio referral if I were you. Try and nip it in the bud.

debdee · 19/06/2012 23:39

Please don't let the gp fob you off that its normal pregnancy pains or they can't so anything about it. 1st pg I kept complaining to numerous gps & mws, in the end gave up. At 38 weeks saw a new mw who took one look at me struggling to walk & said 'poor thing, you have pgp?' Too late by then. 2nd pg got referred to physio but thy wouldnt refer me until 24 weeks by which point I was in agony. Physio said next time to get referred straight away. This time mw told me a lot of rubbish about how physio wouldn't be able to help me until I had a bup but I wasn't having it. If it is pgp which it really sounds like it you need to see a physio asap. Hope you get help with it tomorrow x
