Fetal Kidney Problems

Hi I'm 21 weeks pregnant and during my 20 week scan it was noticed that the LO's right kidney was holding more fluid than normal but left kidney seemed ok. Today i went to see a consultant for a more detailed scan and it turns out that both LO's kidneys are now holding a lot of fluid and that there could be a possible obstruction on the tubes to the bladder. I'm awaiting a phone call from hospital 2moro to give me another appointment for a referral to Nottingham QMC for further investigation. Really unsure what to think or feel right now and not sure what will happen next, just wondering if anyone else has been through this before and can maybe give me some reassurance please. Thank you in advance.

I had to be rescanned due to one kidney holding excess fluid, it was all ok at 20wk scan (sonographer said baby just needed a wee, and they caught it just before).

However, apparently, if there was something wrong it's quite common and can be fixed after birth with either antibiotics, a small op and another scan.

Do you know the sex of the baby?

This was my experience, hope it helps :)

Thank you I missMiniPop gives me some hope that all will be ok in the end. Not sure on sex of the baby yet, not been able to get a good look sonographers are also struggling to see the detail of the heart, bladder and the facial features, this LO is still so curled up in the pelvis bone still that its hard to see alot of the baby. All way can see is a good strong heartbeat and a very good spine.

Hi, I had this with my 2nd. Was resceanned at 32 weeks and the fluid had level had increased.

Trying hard here to avoid mentioning sex of my baby as it is common in a certain sex adn don't want to spoil it if you don't know.

Anyway my baby was placed on antibiotics at 11 hours old (small dose daily) he is almost 2 and is still on it, it is weight controlled so regular weight checks for correct dose.

Little one is under consultant who we see 6 monthly was 4. Has had a few scans and checks and so far it is still enlarged. Worst case scenario is will need small op at the age of 3-5 if doesn't right itself.

My little one is not showing any signs of being ill because of the the rapid treatment due to scan picking this up, so it is a good thing.

If you have anymore questions please ask me, I am almost 2 years in with treatment plan and it really isn't as scary as it sounds when you first get told all the information.

The tests are a little intrusive and not pleasant to watch but they are so young when it is carried out it is forgotten very quickly.

It is also common for this to right itself before the next scan so try not to worry too much now.

Ohh sorry should say it was only in 1 kidney with my little one, I think the treatment plan varies slightly if in both but you will get all this advice when you see specialist.

Hope everything goes ok and you get appointment soon.

Thanks nunnie, at my 20 week scan, the mw had a look and told me what she thought and we both agreed on what we could see, only my dp doesnt want to know the sex so i have to keep it hidden and he reads the posts on here with me sometimes, but going off the scan my LO is not the common gender for the kidney problems.
Thank you for your help and advise after reading your post it is very settling to know that someone else has/is going through it and there is a light at the end of the tunnel for me. Just sat waiting for the phone to ring to give me my appointment, this day just seems to be going so slowly right now for me. Be glad when i get my little monkey back home from nursery school to keep my occupied

You poor thing. I know exactly how you feel as I had this at my 20 week scan with my DD1. If you google 'Kidney dilatation blue22' my mumsnet thread comes up.
It's a completely happy ending though I had horrible scares through pregnancy.
I'm currently pregnant with DD2 and her kidneys are fine, although she's had markers on her heart picked up at scans. I have come to the conclusion that scans are not necessarily a good thing!!!

nunnie · 20/06/2012 14:59

I have just read your thread blue22, very nosey sorry. What a beautiful ending to a scary pregnancy. I was never told my little one had suffered permanent damage ( is currently 18mm no change from 32 week scan) and I was devestated after they told me at that scan it had more than doubled in size then I googled and pooped. God only knows how you must have felt.
I am almost 2 years in with my little one and looks so well I can't believe that there is a problem (probably due to the antibiotics and close checks).

Hope your DD2 is ok are they rescanning you?

cbd · 20/06/2012 15:32

Thank you blue22 i will read your thread now, i'm scared and nervous but happy that they are checking everything over, especially since they cant see any details of the major organs apart from the kidneys.
Hope everything goes well with DD2

CBD ive just posted on your other thread, my DD has multicystic dysplastic kidney disease, she has one kidney that is large, holds excess water and the ureter is abnormal but she is fine.
She takes antibiotics every day and you wouldnt know she is ill.
They told me she had dilated kidneys on my 20 week scan and i was scanned 3 more times before she was born as the kidney problem did not go away, then she had lots of tests before they came to the diagnosis when she was about 6 months old. She is looked after by birmingham childrens hospital and we go for ultrasounds every 3 months now.
