Pregnant with second child (son is 13 1/2 months) and suffering really badly from nausea. I think I'm around 7 weeks gone, so hopefully it'll ease off in the next month or so, but at the moment I'm finding it really hard to function. Weekends are better as my husband can look after our son.

I've tried metacloprimide, which didn't do anything. Was prescribed stemitol yesterday, which as yet has had no effect either. I can eat (but only a very limited diet), but find drinking really hard for some reason. Dr has said that unless I'm vomiting, they're limited as to what they can give me.

So, does anyone have any tips on getting through this? I know I could be a lot worse and I am feeling supremely sorry for myself.

Have tried seabands (travel sickness wrist bands), but all they did was make my hands really tender. Tried fresh air, tried eating small amounts every couple of hours, tried ginger (yuk)...I'm all out of ideas and quite frankly when I think of another month or so of this, I just cry.

I'm not expecting any miracle cures, but if anyone has anything that helped them, I'd love to hear it.

economymode Glad to hear you've had a day to yourself, I must admit that whenever I feel broody I look back to when I was about 8 weeks pregnant; I was sat on the edge of my bed making my OH promise we would only have one baby. I really feel for you and hope it doesn't last too much longer, mine came and went sporadically throughout but the first trimester was definitely the worst!

economymode · 19/06/2012 08:34

I feel like I've turned a bit of a corner. Still having to take things v.e.r.y slowly, but I can move! Perhaps down to the acupuncture? I have another session this evening. If anyone else is at a complete loss, I'd really suggest giving it a go if you can.

Having a reassurance scan today and hoping I'll be able to drive myself, although my parents have offered.

Cwm, so glad to hear that the seabands are working for you. My main problem was that they felt so tight and made my hands really tender (I have small hands, by the way!) so I felt very uncomfortable wearing them.

littlemisssunshine - really happy to hear that you're feeling a bit better. If it's any consolation, my first pregnancy was not like this at all. A bit of nausea but it subsided quickly. So, if you do decide to do it again, you might not have such a rough time. However, starting with a rough pregnancy may well put you off for life! But, but, but -when you hold your little one for the first time, all the crap you had to put up with throughout your pregnancy will magically disappear from your mind. That is what is getting me through this - those first few moments are truly wonderful. That said, I'm not doing it again after this!

Hope everyone manages to take things as easy as you can today. Collective chin up!

Oh, I have never forgotten how awful I felt in the first trimester of my second pregnancy! You poor thing. Hope you have turned a corner now.
I used to live on Dr.Pepper, full fat milk, antacid tabs from Asda and crackers.
Feel sick just thinking about it!
Good luck for scan.

economymode · 19/06/2012 17:30

Oh my word. My mum gave me some of her gaviscon tablets today and they are amazing! They seem to be helping better than anything else. Now, I've had indigestion and heartburn before, and that isn't what this feels like. I feel sick to the core a lot of the time, so why would antacid tablets help? Not complaining. Thank you threelittleducks for recommending them Smile.

I constantly grazed on popcorn & nuts/dried fruit and sipped water or drank milk. Toast also good.

Think white food lol

When I wasnt grazing on the above, I was sucking mints & bolied sweets (M&S do sugar free ones if you are getting through quite a few)

Peppermint tea also very good

I am feeling a little bit sorry for myself. I am 19 weeks with DC2. I had sickness with my last pregnancy and the nausea lasted until about 32 weeks. This time I am finding the nausea even worse :(
I am finding that nothing really works. On the days it is bad there seems to be no rhyme or reason to why it is worse than the day before. I feel and have even been sick in the night! Sorry to moan but it is getting to the point where I am not looking forward to our arrival but just hoping to stop feeling ill!
I can only describe the nausea as like the worst ever hangover but without the headache as I feel exhausted as well as unwell.
I am definitely going to try the things that I haven't yet that are on here so thank you! Bit dissapointed to see that anti-emitics wouldn't help as I was wondering if I should speak to the GP about them!

33goingon64 · 19/06/2012 20:04

I loved sniffing lemon especially in a cold glass of fizzy water.

littlemisssunshine3 · 19/06/2012 20:20

Hi january sunshine, join the club :(

My Gp prescribed me anti emitics but they did nothing but make my headaches worse...........Try ice lollys, myself and others on here are all converts.

Economy how did the scan go? Hope you are doing ok today and thank you for your kind words, you made me cry

Theenormouscrocodile · 19/06/2012 20:57

When are you taking your folic acid? I started taking mine at bedtime & the nausea has improved greatly. Still have yuk moments during the day but nowhere near as bad as when taking folic acid in the day. Just an idea for you Smile

economymode · 20/06/2012 08:11

Scan went well, thank you littlemisssunshine. It was only a reassurance scan and was put at 7 weeks and 2 days. Giving a due date of February 3rd. I'm not taking anything for granted until our 12 week scan at the end of July, but the sonographer did say yesterday that it looked like a strong, viable pregnancy.

JanuarySunshine, there's no harm asking your GP to see if there is anything that might work for you. Sorry to hear that you are suffering, too.

Theenormouscrocodile, I have to admit that I have been very lax and completely forgotten to take my vits the last few days. I might start taking mine at night, thanks!

33goingon64, good idea with the lemon, that's another one to try when I feel rough.

Feeling ok-ish this morning, but the day is yet young. Going to stock up on Gaviscon tabs as they seriously are working wonders. My husband is not too keen on me taking them for a prolonged period though...

Economy, later in pregnancy if you get heartburn the dr prescribes you gaviscon and you pretty much drink it. It's a very widely used thing in pregnancy. So that might help with your husband. Or you could feed him stuff that makes him feel sick all the time and see how long he lasts Wink

Salukigirl · 20/06/2012 17:38

Hi, this is my first visit here and thought I'd add my experience. I am 12 weeks and the constant nausea has just started to subside after 5 weeks.
I found eating extra strong mints worked quite well as the horrible taste was making me feel even more sick. I also ate loads of melon and pineapple as I couldn't drink much either. I did like the really thick bitty orange juice though.

GetOutMyPub · 20/06/2012 17:47

Do you know what sex your baby is??

I had a real thing for lemon and sour tastes whilst pregnant, usually I cannot eat anything sour (like those awful haribo sweets) and crave anything sweet and stodgy.

I especially had a real thing for freshly squeezed lemon juice from a local deli/cafe type place, which i Used to sniff (discretely) while I drank it

I have two boys

economymode · 20/06/2012 18:48

Well, thought I had turned a corner. But felt so grim at a stay and play session that when a member of staff asked me how I was, I completely crumpled and told her. Rather embarrassed about it now, but at that point in time all I could do was cry. I shouldn't have ventured out really, but I thought I was up to it.

Gaviscon seemed to just work yesterday - today was back to business as usual Sad. I did manage a lie down while my son napped after lunch and that made me feel a bit better for a while, but was feeling awful again by end of the afternoon.

Woe, it's me.

Oh my days I thought all these tips and ideas and there would be at least one that subdued the nausea but no....... I am only 6/7 weeks and honestly the thought of another 5/6 weeks of this is so depressing. I am practiacally house bound I can't find anything that makes me feel even slightly better.... And worst of all I know the GP/midwife won't do a thing seen as I'm not actually being sick.
Honestly feeling like this every moment of everyday is so exhausting I'm really starting to resent being pregnant and that's an awful thing I know...

Can't cope ..... Yuk :-(

bonzo77 · 23/06/2012 08:06

Just a little bit of hope for you. I'm just 12 weeks and feeling much better. Still occasional waves of nausea, but not the constant horror of the last couple of months!

SeagullsFan · 28/06/2012 20:08

Really quite relieved to read this thread. I was feeling quite fed up with the constant nausea (but no throwing up) which I've had since week 5. But now in week 9 it's at its worst and I'm truly miserable. Nothing seems to help except eating and consequently I'm already the size of a house (normally I eat healthy and exercise at least five times a week).

ThatllDoPig · 28/06/2012 20:24

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I felt like this and definately found that orange ice lollies helped for some reason. (My favourite was tesco finest orange juice ones).
And oat cakes,
And later, mashed potato with cheese on top. For some reason it helped if I kept eating, little and often. I did gain weight, but so what, it gets you through and you can lose it again when not pregnant.
If you get indigestion later then I found the chewy remegels fantastic.
