Does this sound normal (TMI)?

I know increased discharge is normal in pregnancy, but does anyone else feel sudden gushes of discharge, e.g. when changing positions? I have had this a bit over the last couple of weeks (I'm 29 weeks) and then a couple of big ones this morning. It is like v watery discharge. No smell really but maybe a bit like grass/sweet (TMI!)?

Has anyone else had gushes of discharge? Don't want to make a fuss if this is in fact normal.

Is it stringy or just watery?

Dolallytats · 16/06/2012 10:40

More discharge in pregnancy is normal, however, the smell you are describing is how people describe the smell of your waters. I would ring your midwife/hospital to be on the safe side x

ViolaCrayola · 16/06/2012 10:45

Thanks. It is definitely pretty watery with perhaps some normal looking discharge in it. Maybe slightly sticky (sorry). I will ring the MW - she won't call back until tomorrow morning - that should be OK though right?

To be honest, I would ring the hospital just to make sure. They may want you to wear a pad so they can check. It may well be nothing, just normal discharge, but it's always best to get checked out if your worried x

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 09:08

Eeek! This morning when I got out of bed I felt something gush and there were two wet patches on the bed (not huge but not tiny either). Does this sound like it could possibly be discharge? Waiting for the MW to call me back...
I had my waters leak with my DC1 and it was like this TBH - just small amounts at a time - but I was 40 weeks then not 29! Shock

Does anyone know what the risks are of having waters leak at this stage?

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 18/06/2012 10:12

I've read on MN that you're at risk of infection, though if it's only a small leak your waters should replenish themselves so you don't particularly need to worry about that iyswim.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 18/06/2012 10:13

By "that" I mean running out of waters or something lol

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 13:01

Thanks. Waiting to hear back from the midwife.

Viola, forgive me for asking such a personal question, but have you and DP had sex recently? It could be to do with that...

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 15:13

That's fine frillylemons! I have given quite a lot of personal info already Blush

Anyway, it is just like that - a gush of fluid coming when you move (TMI!) but we haven't had sex recently, so it can't be that. MW still hasn't called me back, but I don't seem to be leaking much more. It's still worrying me a bit though- may call the day unit...

OP posts:
ripsishere · 18/06/2012 15:23

I'd do that if I were you Viola. That's what they are there for.

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 15:47

Rang the day unit and they advised me to go in... off there now.

Let us know how it goes :) Fingers crossed for you!

EggsMichelle · 18/06/2012 16:21

Fingers are cross for you too

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 18/06/2012 16:25

Hope everything's ok !

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 20:04

Thanks very much. Back now. Basically they did a speculum examination and couldn't see any fluid. Cervix looked normal. So that's good news. Still a bit of a mystery, but the MW said it could have been pooled discharge, and the doctor said it could have been urine (although I am pretty sure it was not!).

Sent home with instructions to come back if it happens more. Am exhausted now but glad I went as it has put my mind at rest to a certain extent.

That's great news!!! :) put ur feet up though x so glad everything is ok!!!!

Combinearvester · 18/06/2012 20:34

Victoria I don't want to worry you but sometimes a speculum examination doesn't find any fluid and yet there has previously been a leak of amniotic fluid, there just isn't any fluid pooling there at the moment they check. Also the waters can leak and the cervix can still be closed, particularly if this is DC2.

I wonder if it would be worth requesting a scan to check your fluid levels, particularly if you have any more weird discharge. . Or request another examination but using the colour change swabs which detect the presence of amniotic fluid (ignore me if they already did use those swabs).

Combinearvester · 18/06/2012 20:35

So sorry I meant Viola not Victoria (losing it)

surfmama · 18/06/2012 21:41

hi viola yes i had this and still do have a quite watery discharge. i had a fluid scan and would recommend that if this happens often you request one.. my levels are 17 which is higher than most, so either i am getting rid of some as i have too much (sonographer told me this no idea if it's true) or i just have a watery discharge. it was very worrying for me at the time they said well come back if it happens again and i said well see you tomorrow then! it happens to me. i chose to buy some amniotic fluid detector pads to put in my pants, they told me at the hosi that they don't trust them but it made me feel much better testing a couple of times a week.

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 21:49

Thanks Wheresmycaffeinedrip! Putting my feet up now :)
Combinearvester - thanks that's helpful info. I think if it happens more I will defo phone back and mention a scan. They didn't use colour change swabs but they did take a swab and said it would be back in 4-5 days. I guess that would be partly a test for amniotic fluid? They did seem quite relaxed about the whole thing which made me feel a little bit Confused but we'll see...

OP posts:
ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 21:53

Thanks surfmama - x post - do you mind me asking if you do detect amniotic fluid with the pads? Or do they reassure you there's none there? And where did you buy them?

OP posts:
Combinearvester · 18/06/2012 21:55

It wouldn't be a test for amniotic fluid, the swab they took will be to test for infection.

It annoys me intensely when they don't make it absolutely clear what they are doing and what they are looking for when they examine you, and what information the examination / tests can give them.

It's more likely than not that you are not having a hindwater leak or something, but they ought to make it clear that a speculum exam is not a definitive test, because then you would know to keep an eye on things rather than ignore any further symptoms.

ViolaCrayola · 18/06/2012 22:03

Thanks v much again for the info Combine - I agree it is annoying when they are not clear! They did list a whole load of things that I should call back about - any further fluid loss, bleeding, pain, tightenings, reduced movement - and I will definitely be keeping an eye on things.

I am still a bit confused about what it actually was - watery discharge that pooled is the only one that I can believe (apart from amniotic fluid), based on what happened.

hi viola they are vision amniotic pads. sell them on nct website but i did a search and got them for about 15 quid cheaper still a fortune though, you can read about them on the companies web site and see what you think x
