Ever since becoming pregnant the old norks have predictably expanded and become hypersensitive. Often have tingling, heavy feelings etc. and was expecting those.

What I wasn't expecting was the extreme reactions to temperatures and I am now becoming slightly worried about the breast feeding thing.
As soon as I get even a hint of a bit chilly they become very VERY painful and the nipples will harden then turn purple then white. The pain is extreme and I literally want to rip them off. One is often worse than the other. It feels like lots of tiny hot needles sticking into the whole breast. The only way to resolve this is to hold a hot water bottle on them or if it is really bad run a hot bath and soak them until they warm up.

Am I alone in this?? Is there anything else I can do as strapping a hot water bottle to my chest isn't always practical!

Oh! Mine are doing this too Gizzy and I think we're both due in October! Mine aren't as painful but I do worry when they turn blue/black Shock I've just been trying to keep them warm Confused

BuntyCollocks · 15/06/2012 16:06

It's probably vasospasm. I suffered terribly during my pregnancy with ds, and all the while I was breastfeeding. It's not harmful, just painful/annoying!

GizzyBoo · 15/06/2012 16:38

Glad its not just me but bugger its painful.

Yup due in October too Fluffy. Its hard to keep them warm though when the rest of me is roasting!

Thanks Bunty I shall see what Dr Google has to say on the matter.

Check out kellymom, great site. Obviously the breastfeeding related vasospasm isn't relevant ATM, but it does mention raynaulds related as well.

I wonder if you could make mini microwavable rice-bag thingies to shove in your bra? Blush

GizzyBoo · 15/06/2012 17:35

Thanks Bunty I will. The breastfeeding has been worrying me with this pain already but I am determined to crack it!

Fluffy that is genius Grin Im gonna pinch a pair of the youngster's socks and have a go Wink

I have had EXACTLY this... and ditto, the thought of breastfeeding worries me. It's actually calmed down in the last few weeks (I'm now 26 weeks) but I had it from about 10 weeks onwards. I had to put the hairdryer on my nipples. It was really bad when I got cold, got out the shower or went for a run. Honestly made me feel sick with the pain.

So Bunty, does it follow that if you have it while pg that breastfeeding will be painful too??

BuntyCollocks · 15/06/2012 21:20

I will be honest, I had a bad time breastfeeding to begin with, but it was a combination of things and not just the vasospasm, although that was both part of it, and exacerbated by it. It gets better in the warmer weather, heat does help as some of you have found out.

My vasospasm resolved itself: I can't remember any episodes past ds being 4/5 months, and I fed until he was a year. Proper positioning and attachment are key to not exacerbating it, and please PLEASE make sure your babies are properly checked for tongue tie. Would have saved my nips me hours of tears and frustration if I'd been taken seriously!

PollyIndia · 16/06/2012 08:57

I've heard a lot about tongue tie the last few days. More common in boys apparently and can make breastfeeding impossible.
Is that what the nipple pain is called, vasospasm?
Heat really helps! I only got mine when I had been running for first 11 weeks of pregnancy as I was in India. It was a shock to start getting it all the time when I got back.

BuntyCollocks · 16/06/2012 11:10

The nipple blanching and turning white, alongside the pain, is a vasospasm.

GizzyBoo · 16/06/2012 12:25

Thanks for all your advice Bunty it has been really helpful.
I think I will mention it to my midwife when I see her on Tuesday.

Polly I also find the only thing that helps is heat. Not always practical though is it lol
