Progesterone after ovulation or after BFP?

I have posted this in conception but thought one of you lovely ladies might be able to give me some positive stories and advice.

I have had 4 miscarriages and all tests from the re-current miscarriage clinic have come back negative. I have a short luteal phase and mentioned this to my consultant who eventually adviced to take baby aspirin every day on going and perscribed Utrogestan (200mg of progesterone) to take after I got a BFP.

I have been reading L Regan's book and looking on the net and am getting conflicting information.

Should I actually take the progesterone after ovulation or when i get my BFP? Is there any good reason not to take it after ovulation and wait? I am currently 4 DPO and more inclined to take it now then wait from the information I have read.

TIA

Hi, I've been through ivf and was given progesterone from egg collection, ovulation, but then the follicles haven't popped naturally and may not become corpus luteum. I would call the clinic and ask again if you can take earlier

Hi Babaloulou I've had recurrent miscarriages too and also came back clear re tests from the recurrent miscarriage clinic - at St Marys where Lesley Reagan is head of the department. I also saw Mr Shehata at the Miscarriage Clinic and was diagnosed with something called high Natural Killer Cells. Great that your consultant has been forward thinking and prescribed progesterone and also low dose aspirin.

My protocol (along with steroids and a few other bits) was to take baby aspirin when TTC and then introduce 400mg of progesterone pessaries once getting a BFP - continuing to 16 weeks pregnant. I am now 34 weeks pregnant so something seems to have done the trick. I do know some people who have been told to take it before BFP though.

Have you read Dr Beer's book too? That is interesting reading along with Lesley Reagan's.

Good luck with it all, there are plenty of us on the conception boards who know what you are going through and I hope you get that sticky one soon.

Thanks Freelance I really do hope this works for us. It's certainly been a journey with 4 miscarriages and a stillborn baby at 35 weeks last year Sad

Feeling positive though as we are getting some help and hopefully half way there at least.

Oh that's awful. What happened with the baby last year, if you don't mind me asking? Do they think it was in any way connected to the miscarriages? I have had four miscarriages two but whilst they were devastating and indeed life changing, I can't imagine what your late loss must have been like. As it is I am so paranoid every day with this pregnancy.

We have a bit of a support group going on for people who have had recurrent miscarriages since been diagnosed with high natural killer cells. Although you haven't had that diagnosis there are a lot of people on the thread who know all about recurrent miscarriage including what supplements to take and tests to have. I myself found out about the NK cells thing here on mn and I don't think I would be this far pregnant at all if I hadn't.

Feel free to come on over and ask for any advice you wish, everyone is very lovely:

Our baby boy died due to a very rare condition with his umbilcal cord. His death is not connected to my early miscarriages or so I am to believe at the moment anyway. Waiting on an appointment with my re-current misscarriage consultant. I saw him after my 3 miscarriages and then saw him at 18 weeks pregnant so his job was done as such. Then I miscarried again after and wasn't going to leave my doctors office without being referred again! Not happy with you are just unlucky!!!

What a horrible, tragic occurrence Babaloulou. No I don't blame you for not accepting the 'unlucky thing'. If you do want to know more about the treatment myself and a lot of others are having do give us a shout xx

Just to confirm what others have said, I believe that when undertaking IVF women are given progesterone starting from egg collection (equivalent of ovulation), but when it is a natural pregnancy it is only to be taken after BFP (however, you can take low aspirin right from ovulation). This is just what I've picked up along the way - I'm not a doctor, so of course check it with your specialist. If you have been diagnosed specifically with low progesterone, then perhaps they would get you to take it right from ovulation, but otherwise I think I remember reading that there is a reason not to take it so early.

I would second the previous posters in recommending that you pay privately to go to someone like Dr Shehata, Dr Gorgy, or to an IVF clinic like the ARGC (in London). They are all at the top of their field when it comes to dealing with miscarriages.

Best of luck x
