20 week scan....going back next week

Just back from my 20 week scan. I am 21+2 with dc3. Midwife that scanned me was really quiet, didn't make much conversation. Wasn't that nice, didn't put me at ease etc. Told me she couldn't see the bladder filling up or bottom
Of the spine. So got to go back next Wed, 20th. I am now worried. Went back in and asked another midwife if this was anything to worry about as the midwife who scanned me was now scanning someone else. She said if there was any concern they'd have referred me to the consultant. She said that it would have been the position the baby was in. Why didn't the midwife that scanned me say this? I have 2 dc, dd, nearly 11 and ds, 5 who is severely disabled, which obv doesn't help my panic :( still worried :( anyone else had experience of getting sent for a re scan? Thanku for any replies in advance xx

I had to have this, my 20 week scan was done early (19 weeks) as we were going on holiday, and the combination of it being early and apparently my bladder not being full enough meant the sonographer couldn't check everythign he needed to. We were told that he couldn't measure the head or the spine due to the baby's position.

Like you I found it a very serious scan (which it is, they are checking for anomolies) and whilst DH and I were very excited the sonographer didn't smile or chat to us at all.

When we went back 2 weeks later they were able to check everything we need to and baby was completely fine! The scan did take ages though as the baby wouldn't move into the right position.

I can understand your worry but as the second midwife said, it will just have been that the baby wasn't in the right position and hopefully next week it will be.

Really aworryingtrend? That does make me feel like I'm not alone then. It's just made me worry as the midwife wasn't clear enough as to whether it was about the baby's position or a possible problem Sad now have a week of bloody worry Sad

Happened to me and my perfect son is now asleep next to me! Try not to worry x

I am going back for a rescan on Friday - had original 20 week scan 2 weeks ago but baby in wrong position to see nose, lips and heart. Absolutely do not worry - they just won't have got a good enough view of those bits so need to try again another day. If they thought they were seeing something wrong they would have told you.
Big hugs, it's a scary feeling but please try not to worry.

There was a problem at my 2o week scan and they explained everthing to me and sent me to ante atal to discuss it with a Consultant and went through what would happen next in regards to further scanning.

What I am trying to say is if there is a problem they usually talk you through it there and then (they do here). However if you are concerned please ring the clinic in the morning and ask them to confirm why you need to come back.

Hope everything is ok, this pregnancy thing is very worrying, but all worth it in the end.

nunnie · 13/06/2012 21:43

Also in my experience they do spend alot of time concentrating as there is a lot to cover on this scan so they are a lot less chatty.

Notmyselfatall · 13/06/2012 22:48

Hiya Smile thanks for yr replies. I do see what u mean nunnie, hope everything was ok after ur 20 week scan? Pregnancy is just so worrying isn't it? I'm praying everything is ok with baby

My little boy is 2 now and under a Consultant and has been on antibiotics since he was 11 hours old due to the findings on that scan. If I am honest there was no signs when he was born of there being a problem with his bladder and kidney so that scan was a godsend without it I would probably have ended up with an very ill little boy and lots of tests and waiting to find out what the problem was, this way he is monitored regularly and so far has had no infections which is good.

Try not to worry (easier said than done I know).

You can always ring and ask as I suggested earlier to set your mind at ease.

Hope everything goes ok with your pregnancy.

Notmyselfatall · 14/06/2012 08:28

That's great about your lil boy nunnie Smile glad he's ok. I just get so worried as my lil boy, 5 has severe special needs. He has a chromosome disorder, severe epilepsy, damage to his brain, can't walk or talk etc so I worry obv. On my lil boy's scans tho, nothing was picked up. X

I had my 20 week scan yesterday - the sonographer was very chatty after but serious at the time. I had to do lots of star jumps to get the baby to budge position which it did but she had said if the baby didn't move we'd have to come back. Like others have said they would have referred you if there was something to worry about.

Notmyselfatall · 14/06/2012 08:58

Ty tomatoplant Smile she did get me to go for a walk and come back... No change tho. Was same at my private gender scan a few weeks ago...she wouldn't move for ages. Had to go back for rescan just to check she was in fact a girl. The sonographer had bn 85% sure she was but wanted to be 100 %

Totally understandable why you are worried then. Sounds like your little girl likes to be awkward during scans. You really can and should ring the ultrasound department and discuss your worries, there is no point in worrying needlessly if you can get answers. I am sure they won't mind talking you through the reason for the rescan.

BuntyCollocks · 14/06/2012 11:21

I had to for dc1, as the position he was in they couldn't see the four chambers of his heart clearly, but they assured me all was well.

MsElisaDay · 14/06/2012 11:27

I'm in the same position as BuntyCollocks.
I went for my 20-week scan next week and the sonographer said that, while she could get a nice strong heartbeat, they couldn't see all four chambers of the heart, or the "outflow", clearly enough.
She then asked me to do lots of wriggling and jumping about, but he still didn't move. As a result, I'm going back in two weeks for a rescan.
She reassured me that it was nothing to worry about, and in fact I'm looking forward to it. It's another chance to see my son!

Madmum24 · 14/06/2012 11:32

Really nothing to worry about, with my dd3 i had to go back 4 times as they couldn't get a good view of her heart.

hermionestranger · 14/06/2012 11:34

Happened to me but I was made to go for a walk and drink water and come back in an hour. They then stuffed cushions under my bum to try and make ds2 turn so they could see the spine better.

He's now 18mo and a bundle of energy.

lots33 · 20/06/2012 14:23
