I'm probably over-reacting but I trust MN more than i trust google and i can't find my book of food info for pregnancy! I've just had a Chinese - first time years - and it didn't occur to me until i was halfway through that i should worry. There was water chestnuts (i think i only ate a couple of pieces) and beansprouts (cooked). Do you reckon Bump will be ok? Thanks

I cant remember water chestnuts or beansprouts being on the list of dodgy foods so i guess you should be fine :)

Worrying about what exactly?

McPhee · 12/06/2012 20:07

I have a duck and noodles every friday, which has both of these in. I'm now nearly 37 weeks and no harm done. They're not on any banned list, but I've steered clear of rice from the takeaway on advice. Apparently it's not always fresh, double cooked and can contain bacteria.

Thanks for quick responses all! I had a niggling feeling they'd been on the 'bad' list but i couldn't be sure - i have Chinese so rarely it's not one i'd taken notice of but thanks for reassurance.

Don't worry! If it was an issue they'd be on the NHS / pregnancy book lists of things to avoid (which they're not). I think you might be thinking of the raw beansprout scare a year or two ago (people thought they were contaminated with something dodgy but it came to a big nothing). Cooked beansprouts were fine away...

I must confess Asian seems the most pregnancy friendly food to me (except sushi!). Obviously I avoid dodgy looking outlets but that's what I do anyway pregnant or not!

HoneyMum21 · 13/06/2012 11:03

Thanks violet. We only got Chinese cos DH really likes it but having had it it was very comforting and almost refreshing!

Good news violetlights - sushi is ok as long as the fish has been frozen first. This will be the case in the UK for any sushi prepared not on the premises, i.e. supermarket sushi would be fine, and you can always check at the finer sushi establishments.

Don't take any notice of the "bad" list, its a load of old bollocks...

HoneyMum21 · 13/06/2012 17:08

Hehe. Thanks CakeBump

RJandA - Many thanks! I knew about the freezer aspect of sushi but I do like having an excuse not to eat it! (My DP's favourite but mine not so much...!)

I would like to point out that China actually has quite a high population. So it seems that Chinese food is not doing their unborn babies any harm.

dontlaugh · 13/06/2012 19:22

I'm due in 2 weeks and have just had a chicken satay. burp. Delicious it was too.

PickleSarnie · 13/06/2012 19:53

I can't understand what possible issue there would be with eating either of those vegetables? It would be like worrying because you've just eaten a carrot or because some broccoli was a bit crunchy.

SauvignonBlanche · 13/06/2012 19:56

Grin@ KatandKit, the Chinese seem to do ok on it, don't they?
