Hi - i am 4 weeks pregnant and already feelying horribly sick and nauseus. Is this at all normal? I have had several friends have babies and none of them seem to feel this sick so early on - although they could have just not mentioned it.

Any advice on whether this is normal and what you've all managed to eat?

Hi Lily
Congratulations!!
In my limited experience sickness certainly can be around at 4 weeks. I'm at a similar stage and feel sickly on and off. Last time i was pregnant i felt sick all bloomin day for weeks!! Ended up on a beige diet, pasta, spuds, bread, nuts, for some reason anything beige appealed and felt settling. I've never heard of sickness being a sign of anything bad so i'd settle in and jump on the carb train!!! [big grin]

I'm assuming this is your first baby? There is a condition called hyper emesis. (see support thread lower down page) which is extreme morning sickness, basically affected women feel sick pretty much all through their pregnancy and vomit several times a day.
On the other hand, I felt really sick last week at 4 weeks and now I feel just fine (I'm sure it will come back and bite me on the arse at 6 weeks or so)
The problem with morning sickness is

  1. it can actually be any time of the day, although mostly you get to know after a while when it's likely to hit
  2. it can actually start from before you get a positive test and finish anywhere from 10 to 40 weeks. Any variation on the theme is "normal" but generally it starts around the 6 week mark and the worst tends to be over by 10 weeks
  3. some women feel sick at certain times, or even all day, but never actually puke. Other women are sick with no warning whatsoever several times a day. Basically there are as many different manifestations of morning sickness as there are pregnant women! Try to eat small bland meals frequently or snacks, I find being hungry makes me feel worse, make sure you stay hydrated too. All you can do is take one day at a time and know that it will eventually go away, definately once your baby is born and probably by the time you have your dating scan. Sorry I can't offer much more comfort, I know how debilitating it can be!

LilyRosa,
Congrats!! I recommend lots of carbs to help with the sickness, i'm 6 weeks now and not had much morning sickness but when i do i tend to have a jacket potato or pasta and i feel so much better! x

lily there does seem to be a correlation with sickness that starts very early on (and carries on) and going on to have hyperemesis. Go and have a look at the hyperemesis support thread when you have a moment. I started feeling sick about 10 days before a positive test (so immediately, basically) and was hospitalised for the first time at five weeks. Not to scare you, but do take it gently especially if/when you start actually vomiting. I found at the very beginning I was extra hungry. If that's you, go with it - I think my body was trying to stock up a bit before the vomiting started and I lost a lot of weight. Some people find salty/spicy/sweet/fizzy things are more palatable than plain stuff, just eat what you fancy and what helps, don't worry about it being unhealthy.

I am nearly 15 weeks now and still vomiting and still taking drugs but over the worst. Even if it does get bad it doesn't last for ever.
