Unplanned Pregnancy - what to do first?!

Just found out that i'm pregnant (unplanned!!) despite taking OCP, I'm 38, first pregnancy and am otherwise in great health. I think i may be about 5 weeks. I started folic acid yesterday (better late than never!) When should i go to my GP, i dont want to waste his time going too early as nature has to do the work in the early stages but i am also wondering about scans, is the first one at 6 weeks or 12 weeks? Any advice that you experienced mumsnet users have will be very much appreciated!! xx

Hi Ickleboy

Congratulations! If I were you I would call your surgery and tell them you've just found out your PG and ask them if you need to come in. My DR saw me straight away. My surgery refers you to the local midwives team and you have a booking in appointment at about 8/9 weeks and then a scan at 12/13 weeks.

Good Luck! : )

Congratulations!! Smile First scan in 12 weeks. GPs aren't too fussed until you are 8 weeks. Good work on the vitamins. I can recommend 'What to expect when you are expecting' - book, not film! Very useful for all the questions you think are too silly to ask other people Smile

Thanks everyone, i will make a call to the surgery and take it from there, i will also look at the book you recommend QueenieBea, at this point i need all the help i can get, so many things to learn about! Its a whole different world!!! :) x

Congratulations. I think you can just call straight through to your chosen hospital these days. your doc wont do much. Might prod you and refer you to hosp but thats it.

You don't really need to do much at this stage. Just inform your GP so they can assign you a midwife and just keep tabs on you. The first scan is at around 12 weeks.

The first few months you are pretty much left to your own devices but as you progress more you'll need to go in for regular checks to your blood pressure and so on. The midwife will then visit you at home and discuss your birth plans with you.

The NCT run their own ante-natal courses which I highly recommend - they are very good for arming you with all the info you need to make a decision about how you will have your baby. You also get to meet other women at the same stages of pregnancy and often these little groups become social gatherings where you can draw support and compare notes.

Congratulations - you'll love it! Smile

Congrats Ickle - I'm 38, too, 5+5 wks, and ours is also a surprise (albeit a very happy, much longed for one!)

Everyone has posted good stuff for you, but you should also start taking a daily dose of folic acid as it's most important in the early weeks of bambino development.

Enjoy your pregnancy!
