Anyone taken anti-sickness tablets during pregnancy?

Hi

I apologise in advance for the moany nature of this post!

I am currently 8.5 weeks pregnant with my second child and am suffering from chronic morning sickness, by chronic, I mean feeling sick 24 hours a day and being sick intermittently throughout the day. I bring up most food although not immediately after eating, sorry about the graphic detail! I cannot even tolerate thinking about food let alone cooking which obviously makes it very challenging looking after my daughter.

This has been going on 2.5 weeks now and I already feel exhausted and don't want to do anything for fear of being sick, with my previous pregnancy I was sick all the way through, but it eased a great deal at around 5 months.

I am seeing the Dr tomorrow to ask him about anti sickness tablets as I just not feel I can carry on like this for the next 3 months, so I was wondering if anyone else had tried anti sickness meds whilst pregnant and whether you felt they were safe?

Thanks for any advice.

what a horrible gp. clearly has absolutely no bloody clue. i am so sorry you have experiencing this. it is the absolute pits and the website linked to is fab.

stepfordmum · 11/06/2012 17:17

Thank you all for your support, it helps knowing others understand. My experience so far has been people who offer some sort of crap advice like eat a ginger biscuit when you know that their experience of pregnancy nausea was absolutely minimal and they look at you as if you are some sort of hyperchondriac!

I have booked another GP appointment with a different one at our practice who will hopefully be more sympathetic, it's on Thursday so fingers crossed for then.

FFS, if it was left till you were so dehydrated that you weren't weeing then you'd need to be admitted on a drip and run the risk of kidney damage. Glad you're getting a 2nd opinion.

VivaLeBeaver · 11/06/2012 17:57

I vomited through most of my pregnancy. Buccastem didn't help but cyclizine helped quite a bit, still chucked up though - nowhere near as much.

GTbaby · 11/06/2012 20:22

i was given Avomine at 7weeks. my wee was very dark, i cudn't keep anything down, lips cracked, skin on face was very dry. i am 20weeks and still take it once a day, as when i have tried to come off it i start being sick again.

now you can buy Avomine from a pharmacy [its just travel sickness stuff], i have had to do so several times as i haven't been able to get to Dr for a prescription in time. you could do this , depends how confident you feel.

OR you can go buy it and take it to the Dr and say you want to take it. maybe see another Dr? go to a walk in clinic? ask your Midwife. my Dr was very nice and told me i had to take two weeks off sick and relax, that this was no time to over do things and end up in hospital. i know i am very luck with my Dr.

basically go and kick up a fuss. just tell him you are not weeing! you dont want to end up in hospital.

my tip would be ice lollies, will get some fluid into you and its so slow that you should be able to keep some down x

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/06/2012 20:23

Stemetil then Cyclizine for hyperemesis. I still threw up on them though.

ontesterhooks · 11/06/2012 20:30

Hi I started a thread just last week about how bad sickness had to be before seeing doctor. Everyone really helpful and didn't even see doctor he listened to my symptoms over phone - i stressed that I had lost 1/2 stone in 2 weeks and he put me on cyclizine - so far so brilliant has really helped !

BikeRunSki · 11/06/2012 22:13

I used to put ice cubes in my mouth to melt to try and get some fluid in to me.

stepfordmum · 12/06/2012 14:25

Thanks GTbaby, that's interesting about being able to buy Avomine over the counter, will bear it in mind if I have no luck on Thursday. Although I am still rushing to the toilet thinking I'm going to vomit on a regular basis and feeling as nauseous, for some reason I've not brought much up since yesterday evening, it just seems to be a lot of saliva.

I have booked an acupuncture appointment as well for Thursday, don't know if it will help but am desperate enough to try!

The ice cubes are a good idea BikeRunSki as even the thought of water repulses me (I'm sure like others).

I had moderate sickness with dd1, which at the time I thought was bad enough (sick 5 times a day til about 6months) but with dd2 I was sick 20 times a day, went to docs who prescribed me something (can't remember what it was-but it made me fall asleep) I think the only way it worked for me was that it knocked me out and then I could keep whatever little I had in me in. It was hell-I remember thinking I can't do this Sad but by about 6-7months I was just feeling sick and wasn't sick anymore. Interestingly I could not stand water-could not keep it down, could not smell it without being sick etc etc. Showers were a nightmare. Even when I was 'better' and not being sick I couldn't drink water-and an example-I made a curry and let it dry out a bit too much on the hob so added water to thin it down a bit-I couldn't eat it as I could taste the water!!! I still couldn't drink water til dd2 was about 6months old. Randomly I discovered the only thing I could drink was soda water, even though i hate the stuff!

Sorry for the ramble! Anyway I have 2 happy, healthy dds and this morning I got a positive result....so dc3 hopefully on the way Shock......I'm feeling quite sick already, I just hope I won't be as sick [fingers crossed!]

Get the doc to give you something-it really will help-even if i reduces the amount of times you are sick, and remember it will get better!!!! Good Luck!

Hi, I am early on with my pregnancy and I am struggling so hard with it, just need a bit of advice. I am being sick all the time through the day and feeling sick 24/7, I have no energy, not eating at all or drinking, every time I do I throw it back up within about five minutes. I dont leave the house as I find it hard to get out of bed and all I want to do is sleep as I just have no energy to move or do anything, I'm crying all the time and just fed up about it, it is my first baby and I'm scared I'm hurting it by not being able to eat or drink. What can I do?

megletthesecond · 07/02/2016 18:47

bow hang on, this is an old thread. Let me find the current sickness thread for you, there'll be loads of posters on there with up to date advice.

Allisgood1 · 07/02/2016 18:51

I took metaclopramide. All 3 times. It was only effective in preventing food coming up, not in actually making the nausea better b

SmallBee · 07/02/2016 18:55

Hi bowjenk.
Poor you, it's horrible thst you are struggling so much but know that you are not alone and there is help available.
First step is to visit this website as they are full of lots of information, tips and strategies. Pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
Book an emergency appointment with your gp. Not all GPs (or even all midwives) and aware that severe NVP and HG can be treated with medication so go armed with the information provided by the PSS website.
I would recommend calling PSS and seeing if they can put you in touch with one of their peer counsellors to help. They really helped me and my SIL.
Lastly don't feel bad for feeling bad, you do what you need to do to get through this as best you can, even if that means eating all the carbs, or just ice lollies, or staying in bed all day long.

Salmiak · 07/02/2016 19:20

Poor you, def get another gp appointment. I took cycline, buccastem and metaclopamide in my first pregnancy. My second was a lot tougher (partly from not being able to hibernate as had DD to look after) and was on the above but ended up in hospital several times for cyclizibe injections. Eventually was prescribed obdasatron 3x a day, plus cycline and metaclopomide.

When you see your gp get him/her to weigh you and also test your uribe for ketones

megletthesecond · 07/02/2016 20:33

.... bow, if you look at the pregnancy topic there is a 'hyperemesis support' thread not too far from the top of the list. That's the most recent one.

(Thought I'd posed this an hour ago but I didn't actually press post).

Hello, yes I took avomine, buccastem, cyclizine and ondansetron. Some in combination. Get yourself on the hyperemesis (the word just means hyper-sick) support thread. There's lots of lovely people there who will sympathise with how miserable sickness is.

In terms of seeing a gp, I was lucky with mine as he's fab. Go on your gp practise website and see if anyone has an interest in womens health. Failing that, pick someone that qualified as a gp within the last couple of years - their experience on a hospital gynae/mat ward is likely to be more recent and they should be more familiar with prescribing anti-emetics.

Asking for avomine/promethizine first is a good idea, as it's been used for donkey's years and most hcps are happy prescribing it. It can make you very sleepy though.

Sorry you're feeling so rubbish. It really is miserable to be vomiting so much.
