reoccurring UTIs in pregnancy

I have another Urine infection, not seen the dr but classic signs, (painful urination, frequent urination, painful back) I had one 2 weeks ago and took a fulll course of anti biotics.

I'm 16+5 weeks, I can't get an apt with my dr today so I'll either have to go to ooh tonight or wait until tomorrow.

I drink loads and I am a very hygienic person.

This happened every few weeks in my last 2 pregnancies, it's getting silly now.

so a few questions.

Do I go to ooh or wait until I can possibly see a GP tomorrow and drag the kids along to that?

Do I request some sort of further testing into why this happens?

Should I buy some of the dip tests and use them at home so I can just call the dr and say that x,y,z is showing up since it's happening so frequently.

Is there anything they can do to minimise this or am I destined to spend the rest of the pg on and off antibiotics?

Is there anything I can do to help it/stop it happening?

TIA

I don't know. I'm currently 11+2 and on my first UTI, last pregnancy had 3, 2 years in between and in that time I Had NONE. I hate taking antibiotics and pretty much always get thrush [grim]. Let me know what happens x

I suffer with recurrent uti's. I take cefalexin every day, even during my two pregnancies on the advice of my urologist. Its very safe to do so. I take one every day all year round and 3 if I feel I am getting it - they give me enough to self medicate.
I'm 39 weeks preg at the moment and have managed to keep it under control by doing this.

Ask if they send the sample to the lab to test for antibiotic resistance. It may be that the antibiotic is not the right one. In pregnancy we're at a higher risk of it developing to a kidney infection which has lots of associated risks for the pregnancy.

I took cefalexin every day too.

Thanks for the replies.

I was in a lot of pain that night (that I posted this) so went to OOH with a sample. She dipped it and the whole coloured strip turned brown (sorry tmi) and the sample smelt horrid.
The dr said it may be resistant to the Amoxcillin (sp?) that I'd had previously do sent it off to the lab and put me on co-amoxiclave in the meantime, temp was up as well.

I have to call the GP tomorrow to check I'm on the right antibiotic and make an apt with my usual GP to discuss longer term antibiotics.
I'm not in pain anymore but still weeing a lot and being sick/headachey, so maybe it needs changing but it's not getting any worse thankfully.

tits sorry you are feeling bad. I used to suffer really badly with this. I went to see a homeopath and have never had it since, so if it is an option for you then you could consider this (I would pursue medical route also due to pregnancy). There are a few self help things you can try also. Cranberry capsules - boots sell a good strength (don't drink juice). Probiotics - not the silly full of sugar drinks in the shops, but from somewhere like bioforce or cytoplan. These will help balance your system, but not worth taking them until your antibiotics are over. get well soon.

I feel your pain! I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant and have had UTIs pretty much constantly since booking in. I've been on and off abribiotics for my whole pregnancy and ended up being hospitalised at 29 weeks as the infection spread to my kidney and I needed antibiotics via a drip as my pulse and temperature were ridiculously high. Whilst in hospital I had a kidney and bladder scan which revealed an abscess on my kidney and two kidney stones. They said that these could either have been the cause of the recurrent infections as they kidney was being prevented from draining fully OR they could be the result of the infections. They were reluctant to do anything until I've had the baby so I'm on daily antibiotics and have my kidney scanned every two weeks to check the ABs are keeping everything at bay. I would press to have a kidney and bladder scan if I was you, just so they can see if there is anything lurking. I'd hate for anyone else to end up in the hospital too.
