Heavily pregnant woman coming off sunbed

Im not sure what to think of this but today in the changing room a heavily pregnant lady came out of the sunbed glowing bright red, i was shocked as she then walked round with a towel under her belly which was also glowing bright red.

I might be wrong but i thought that you couldnt go on a sunbed if you were pregnant, am i right in thinking this?

No she was definately pregnant, she was very slim and she looked to be about 7/8 months pregnant and also did the "pregnant walk".

Yes cod i would think that they would have to, they are very strict about rules etc but dont know if i would want to report them as its not really their fault its the woman,s fault and i suppose that its up to her really.

If its one of those pay as you go ones, coin operated and no manager about ( 2 in my city) then pretty much anyone can use them

Have seen very young girls on them

jayjaybaby · 21/02/2006 20:41

must say my mate works in one and she has said it's ok for me to finish my course but i dont feel comfatable i'm sure it's not linked but jordan(the glamour model) said in her book she used them all the way through her first pregnancy and look at her little boy bless him i must say if we must protect ours eyes surely skin over growing baby isn't strong enough to protect it otherwise you would just close yours eyes not being judgemental tho

welshboris · 21/02/2006 20:45

jayjaybaby, dont go on them whilst pregnant, the guidelines set by health professionals are there for a reason

And dont use Jordan as a role model, she also drank during her pregnancy, slept with Dwight Yorke and thought for 4 weeks for a name for her son, then decided on JUNIOR

jenk1 · 21/02/2006 20:57

Yes it is a coin operated pay as you go one and there is no manager around either.

Also am i right in thinking that false tanning is safe during pg, as it would surely be safer to do that rather than go on a sunbed-just a thought.

This thread really touched a nerve... I used to get sunbeds prescribed to me by my dermatologist for psoriasis. Don't know if they still do that - it might be a bit oldfashioned. I didn't have any psoriasis at all when I lived in Oz because of the wonderful sunshine, it just came back a little bit moving back to the UK. Since getting pg (am 26 + 2) my psoriasis has been really, really bad again. I haven't used a sunbed but I'm sorely tempted. There are lots of steroid creams I can use, but I'm dubious about their effects on the baby too. I've tried homeopathic remedies, but to no avail... At the moment I'm not using anything except the usual emolients which really don't help. But I keep looking longingly at the sunbed whenever I'm in the changing room, thinking how lovely it would be if my skin didn't feel such agony. Even my arthritis (which is related to my psoriasis) gets better when I have a sunbed. But I know if I had a sunbed, I'd get filthy looks from people when I come out of it. And I don't know for sure that my skin would react the same way to sun now that I'm pg. Of course I would never purposely do anything to hurt my baby. I've never had more than one sunbed per 2 weeks even before being pg - it's not a tanning thing, just a dont-want-to-be-in-pain any more thing! So if you see a heavily pregnant woman coming out of a sunbed in the London area over the next month or so, don't judge her too harshly, it might be someone like me who has really been struggling to do the right thing...

jenk1 · 22/02/2006 20:50

Oh no, i didnt mean to judge her at all, i just wondered what the guidelines were for pregnant women.

Thebecster - just thought I'd tell you about my sister and her amazing transformation from a really bad Psoriasis sufferer, to someone with simply dry skin. She used to suffer REALLY badly with her skin and was in constant pain from it. She too had all the steroid creams and emoliants in the world but they made no difference.

About a year ago she moved to Scotland and starting running a business from home. Now obviously that in itself hasn't affected her skin but in moving away and working from home she has also dramatically changed her diet, as she now cooks from scratch, generally eats organic and doesn't grab a sarnie on the run or a can of red bull to keep her on the go.

The difference it has made to her skin is amazing. Her Psoriasis has pretty much cleared up on it's ow................not saying this is what you should do (and moving to Scotland may be a bit severe!) but I think there has to a be a link between diet and skin doesn't there. Makes sense really?
