First of all, I am supposed to be getting kittens, I don't know whether to now say that I will be unable to have them as they will be indoor cats and I'll also have to toilet train them, and change their litter as it was agreed with dp he would not look after them as I was the one who wanted them.

Saying I don't want them this late in the day is going to cause upset and annoyance to the person who I am having them from unless I tell them why, and I have only just found out myself and told all of MN and I want to hold of telling people for a few weeks yet.

I shouldn't have the kittens as I am thinking long term when I will have an 18 month old, a newborn and a dp at work, I probably won't be able to stop dd playing with them as I know she probably will. So what do I do, just tell friend in confidence (she is SIL's best mate too, so would probably have to tell SIL too)

Having kittens about having kittens!

Seriously though could you make up a reaction / allergy for your 18 month old probably to a cat/ pet/ dust mite? Doctor advises no pets. Depends on how much you want to keep your news quiet for now. Congratulations.

Ha ha I was going to suggest the same thing. Allergy and docs orders . Congrats on your preg xxx

DanyTargaryen · 01/06/2012 06:49

Allergy won't work, we are at MILs every other week and shes always crawling after the cats there!

I was thinking of just telling them and as I have literally bought everything I need, then found out I am preg, give them the food I have bought for them etc.

lots of children co-exist with pets
lots of pregnant women deal with litter (the sensible ones with gloves Blush)
I would go ahead personally

DanyTargaryen · 01/06/2012 07:22

Thats what I was thinking, I will definitly be okay as long as I use gloves right?

C&P from t'internet
All in all, the risk of acquiring T. gondii from a house cat is rather low. That being said, the CDC suggests the following precautions in order to almost entirely eliminate your risk of cat-borne toxoplasmosis:
?Get someone else to change the cat litter if you can, and if you can't, wear gloves and wash your hands carefully after changing the box.
?Change cat litter daily; T. gondii are infectious between 1 and 5 days after the cat defecates
?Do not feed your cat raw meat, and keep your cat indoors.
?Be careful around stray cats and kittens, and avoid getting a new cat while pregnant.
?Keep outdoor sandboxes covered, and wear gloves when gardening in case an outdoor cat has defecated in your garden.

I don't wear gloves, but obviously avoid contact, clear stools ASAP and always within 24 hours so decreased risk, and wash hands thoroughly.

Commutinghell · 01/06/2012 07:41

You'll be fine. You've obviously been around cats before. The issue comes when you've never had cats before because you won't be immune to toxoplasmosis. If you're a cat person anyway you'll have immunity. Cats are supposed to be great for relieving stress, you'll be so glad of them when you're overdue and fed up, great to take your mind off things.

Thumbwitch · 01/06/2012 07:43

There you go - it says in that list "avoid getting a new cat while pregnant".
You will have to tell them the real reason, and give them the food as a peace offering. Hopefully they'll be too happy for your news to give you a hard time.

Badgerina · 01/06/2012 07:49

I wouldn't go ahead with it. Not because of the litter, but because kittens are BONKERS. For the first year at least, you will be pulling them off the curtains, off the bookshelves, off the tops of cupboards, and out of the baby's stuff. You say they're to be indoor cats and this will only make it worse. I'd tell your friends the real reason.

GingerDoodle · 01/06/2012 09:39

I was raised with cats (and more than a couple of litters of kittens). We have 6 ourselves ranging from hyper 1 1/2 years to grump gandma at 18. I loved having cats as a child.

We had 4 before we moved and they were all indoor cats, they only go our now if we are around. Kittens can be mischievous but ours have hardly ever climbed the curtains and only started raiding the worktops when the got much older.

Its a personal choice obviously. For us 6 is a handful and I wouldn't have any more lol

DanyTargaryen · 01/06/2012 11:20

Thanks guys I'm just going to sit down and tell them that I can't have the kittens because I am pregnant and don't feel comfortable with it. They can be narked all they want but I honestly did want them and have bought everything for them so I'm going to give them what I have bought and apologise. I literally found out day before yesterday and baby is only semi planned as we have taken a 'if it happens it happens' approach as dc1 took so long to conceive.
