Does movement slow down the further on you are?

I'm 32+3 weeks and movements are there but baby is just not as active as a couple of weeks ago. Phoned Delivery suite about 10 days ago, went in and was monitored and they even gave me a scan and all was ok... Wondered whether as baby is getting bigger they have less room to kick etc?

Yep they get all squashed up and can't throw out the punches like in the early days. You should still be able to feel something, but it gets a lot less towards the end. I found the hot weather slowed my DD down as well.

True up to a (very limited) point. There is less room, and the movement might change a bit - say a definite squirm rather than a kick or punch.

But it is really, really important that you get the same number of movements, and the same vigour behind them.

If you notice any reduction in number of vigour, it's very important to go to be checked. MWs would rather reassure hundreds who turn out to be fine, than deal with the consequences of someone who didn't go in when something was about to go wrong.

I am 32 weeks and have the same. I mean, there's not enough lack of movement to make me get it checked out, as it is still moving quite a bit at varying times a day and it's well over what is recommended by the Count the Kicks campaign but it doesn't feel like its completely shifting around like it used to. I am putting that down to less room. The baby is also breech at the moment so kicks are way down low and there's just some 'rummaging' in the middle. Having had miscarriages before (all before 12 weeks) I am particularly paranoid but I think it is all quite normal st this stage for movements to change a bit, but still adhere to the count the kicks guidelines! If they don't, I would get it checked out. I think the heat is relevant too.

Same here, I'm 32 weeks and movements have changed a bit. I get those sudden big jabs less, and it's now more squirmy and wriggling movements. Baby was breech at 28 weeks so I was getting lots low down, i think it's turned now, but it feels like more of the kicks are being directed inwards rather than outwards.

Yes me too, I'm 32+6 and fit the last couple of weeks things have slowed down a bit. Still feeling the baby regularly but it's as if he's just trying to get comfortable rather than kicking and punching now. I'm sure I've read that things slow down so I was expecting it and it's dc4 so you'd think I'd remember really! But I forget these things every time.

I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're counting at least 10 movements a day.

I'm pregnant with my 4th baby now, and I've got to say that at times with all of them I've been concerned due to changes in movement frequency.... however, my 3 previous babies were all born big and healthy and fullterm, and this baby has shown to be perfectly fine with every scan I've had as well! (My obstetrician does a scan (including 4D) every 4 weeks.) I think it's normal for unborn babies to be more active at times and less at other times... just like born babies! :)

Having said that, although movements change as the pregnancy progresses and the baby grows, it's not considered to be normal for movement frequency to slow down too much for days on end. If baby has a quiet day (although you can still count 10+ movements) it's not a problem, but if a noticable slow-down continues for days on end, I would just get it checked out. Probably nothing, but better safe than sorry. :) If the monitoring of your baby shows that he/she is doing just fine, as was in your case, Bonnyone, then you should allow yourself to relax. If there was a problem, it would show up.

Thanks everyone. Am definitely feeling more than 10 movements every day but if I'm concerned I'll phone my mw. Xx

It's not as smile as 10 movements a day. It's about what is normal for you. My DS was normally much more active than that, 10 movements an hour was normal. When he slowed to one movement in an hour at 38 weeks I went straight in. I was induced the next day.

bonzo77 · 31/05/2012 07:20

Smile? simple

ShhhhhGoBackToSleep · 31/05/2012 07:41

It's normal for the movements to change, so instead of a big thump you get a wiggle as the baby haas less room, but it's important that you get the same number as usual.

And as bonzo77 says, it is your babies individual pattern that is important, if you are used to x movements a day and it slows down to 10 then you should be contacting your midwife or delivery suite for advice ASAP.
