Moses Basket

Hi All. I'm a first timer so still relatively "rabbit+headlights" at much of this!! We've been gifted a barely used M+P moses basket which we will have in the bedroom with us. I bought a new mattress for it yesterday but I'm a little confused at the the bedding situation...
It came with a chunky quilt type thingy, which seemed more decorative than anything as its quite small and shaped like the basket (round at one end) I'm due in 4 weeks and if this weather stays, surely she's not going to need much in the way of covers at all if she's in a vest? Even blankets seem ridiculous this time of year! Can anyone advise? I feel slightly elemetary asking! :)

Don't use a quilt for a baby! You've got 2 main options - cellular blanket (White / cream things with holes in them) or a gro bag type thing.

My DS was a chunk at birth so we used a grobag with him straight away (I think they have to be over 6lb 6oz? So their head can't fit through the hole anyway) and have used them since. I've never bought an actual gro bag though (v expensive!). Ikea do functional ones for about £7, sainsburys pretty ones for £14 or TKMaxx it up if you want the real deal!

Oh, they come in different tog ratings but I just use a 2.5 tog and adjust clothes accordingly (though he did the v hot nights in just his nappy!). But you could buy a lightweight one if you wanted?

You should need 3 - a wash, a wear and a spare!

I have some cellular ones and a swaddle blanket. The thing that concerns me is that the baskets themselves seem awfully stuffy compared to a cotbed. If I swaddled her in the basket would that be enough?

Definitely a grobag, they're brilliant. A 0.5 together one is perfect for when it's like this.

Grobags are great but I didn't put DD in hers until she was 4 months and she's just been in her sleepsuit in this hot weather. I swaddled her from birth - she loved it - and it stopped her arms jerking around and waking her up. Not sure how warm a swaddle will be in this heat though. Maybe a sleeveless vest and swaddle up or just a vest with 0.5 tog grobag. Definitely no duvet! Never knew why they sold them with Moses baskets...babies don't have duvets.

WantAnOrange · 30/05/2012 20:53

I've assumed the little duvet is for decoration too. They are not big enough, or the right shape to do anything with!

HybridTheory · 30/05/2012 22:32

Agree about stuffiness in the heat. #2 was put into a travel cot at 6 weeks as it at least gave her some air on the hottest weekend of last year and then as she seemed fine went straight to a cot .

My nephew loves cellular blankets as he likes poking his iccle fingers through the holes :). Good ventilation for bubs too so I've got some of those plus grobags for when a bit older/cooler (aug dd)

Owlshaped · 30/05/2012 23:08

That helps thanks. We do have a cotbed too so if it does get really warm I'd rather put her in that which would seem to have better ventilation. As for the useless little duvet, might give it to the cat to paddle! ;) wasn't going to get a gro bag straight away while she was tiny, so I'll probably get a couple more cellular blankets. Is there any harm in they sleeping in just a nappy when its so warm? Surely they'll let us know if too cold, but better than too hot?

A nappy only will probably be too cold. I would add a short sleeved/ long sleeved vest ( one with poppers under bum) depending on weather.

Ps if you can afford to the merino sleeping bags are fantastic! They are £50+ BUT they are suitable for hot/ freezing conditions due to material, and one size 0-2 years ( also do a 2-4). So in the end you save as don't have to buy several sizes as they grow and you don't need different tog weights. Youngest now has eldests here and 2.5years of solid use an two children and still look and feel new
