Will be travelling at 31 weeks, turning 32 once there, getting very fed up at trying to find travel insurance that will cover the birth, aftercare and flights home should I go into premature labour (not that I'm planning to!) Normal pregnancy so far, HELP!!

I don't know of any that cover the baby once it is out of your body I'm afraid, insurance coveres unplanned events, labour isn't one if you are pregnant (even if it's premature).

Try contacting Bliss (premature baby charity) they might know of some since they support people who go into prem labour abroad and get ditched by their insurance company once the baby is outside their bodies - so they might know of some that DO look after people in that event

Oh. I don't think mine covered flying baby back but can give you details if you want. Was in Ibiza last week at 31 weeks pregnant. Get the ehic card and also the letter to fly from doctor. I was asked for mine by Thomson on the outbound flight.....

My standard travel insurance through my Barclays Premier Acc (£25 a month) covers these things. Thy sent me letter to confirm saying as we're returning at 31 weeks clearly I wasn planning to have baby abroad. Baby discovered if I o as will v a dependent and all family covered. Might be worth taking out simular with your bnk account if available?

Hi.

I work in travel and have insurance through AXA. I will be travelling at 30 weeks and checked with them. They said I was covered and would be covered for anything related to pregnancy including early labour, but only if I had a fit to fly cert from the doctor. The certificate must be issued no more than 5 days before departure.

I traveled at 33 weeks and had Tesco insurance. I asked multiple times and they covered everything about premature labour (up to a certain amount) that I could think to ask them about (will they cover the cost of labour and delivery, what if the baby has something wrong with her when she's born, what about flights home and extra days in the hotel, etc.). You don't need anything special from a doctor just order insurance and go. Hope you have a nice holiday.

If you go to insureandgo website, they have an online chat facility where you can ask an adviser all these questions, and email yourself the answers you got for safekeeping. I didn't ask about the baby if born prematurely, but at least with them you can ask and get an immediate answer.

I chose them for our recent trip as I couldn't face reading all the small print.

I'm now back and nothing happened! Phew

SamraLee, most airlines do require a doctors fit to fly letter if you are flying any later than 28 weeks. It's fairly standard policy.

SamraLee · 30/05/2012 13:05

Yes, the airlines do require a letter, I was only referring to the travel insurance, saying that I did not need a letter from the doctor for the travel insurance. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. :).
