Should I see doctor about light bleeding at 4 weeks?

Hello,

Dating from my last period I am 4 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I had my first positive pregnancy test 7 days after ovulation which is earlier than I've ever tested positive before (I have two children already).

5 days ago I started to have very light bleeding and I assumed it was a chemical pregnancy and I would lose it (I have never had bleeding in pregnancy before). There was a light amount of brown blood to start with and it turned to a light brown/orangey discharge that I am still having. I also have had period cramps a few times and I have had backache since before I did the first pregnancy test at 7dpo. I assumed the backache was to do with ligaments stretching already. I am still positive on tests and they have all benn very dark lines that came up straightaway so I am hoping I am still pregnant.

I thought that there is no point visiting my GP at this stage as it is so early there is nothing that can be done anyway. I think it's too early to even scan.

I keep reading that bleeding in early pregnancy can be normal but I am worried that it is not normal for me. I also think it is a little odd that I had such a positive early test. We only had sex on days 13 & 14 this month so I know I can't be further on than I thought.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you think I should make an apt on Monday or just wait a week or so and see if the bleeding stops?

I think the earliest they can scan is about 5-6 weeks when they would just be able to see the sac and the yolk, I think the heartbeat can be seen around 7 weeks. So it may be worth going to see your GP with your concerns in order to get an appt for a scan in a fortnight. You are v early on though so could it be the implantation bleed? Fingers crossed.

You should go see your GP. If you feel it's not ok, it very likely isn't, you've been PG before, you have an idea how it usually goes.

at this point they probably wont scan you but they can do hCG blood tests every 2 days to get an idea of what's happening

my experience is do not accept one stand alone blood test, demand a few every 2 days, any diagnosis made on one single one is more guesswork than anything!

good luck x

my bleeding at 4 weeks thread (its long and a bit different to yours because my LMP dates are always wrong because I have a v short leuteal phase)

Hi,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your responses on Sat. night.

After I posted here, I started googling the symptoms of ectopic pregnancy (never a good ides, I know!) and started to really panic and took myself to A & E. I have been extremely bloated and had an upset stomach & I found those things as symptoms as well as spotting & cramps. There was no response from the out of hours doctor so I ended up sitting in A & E for hours, worried sick. They told me not to worry unless the pain or bleeding was severe and sent me home.

The spotting stopped on Sunday & I was so relieved. Then yesterday it came back with back pain and I was massively bloated (my mum told me I looked about 4 months pregnant). So, I went to see the GP. He was lovely and arranged for a scan to rule out ectopic pregnancy. However, he said it sounded more like a miscarriage that hadn't left my body properly & told me to prepare myself.

I went for the scan this morning, with my DH. The first sonographer seemed to think I'd definitely miscarried already and was going on about the trouble early tests cause and how I'd 'set something in motion' by testing early & how they would have to re-scan because they probably wouldn't see anything. I felt like I was being told off and I started to expect really bad news.

Then the other sonographer came in and she said the spotting didn't sound like a miscarriage to her... She had a much warmer attitude.

So, to cut a long story short, she did a tranvaginal scan and found two sacs with yolk sacs inside!!! She dated the pregnancies at 5 weeks and has booked another scan for 10 days time to check that they are developing. There was no obvious cause for the blood or cramps.

I'm trying not to get too excited as she did mention that miscarriages are a bit more common with twin pregnancies but she also said that everything looks as it should do. I am still in shock a little bit as I started the day convinced I had miscarried.

I just wanted to update to say thank you and to show that bleeding in early pregnancy doesn't always have a bad outcome (fingers crossed :-) )

TWO! how exciting! glad things are where they should be!

with my son my external scan at 6+4 showed nothing but they did an internal then found something, the first sonographer sounds a bit of an arse as it's not unusual to not see anything externally at 5 or 6 weeks!

fab news Grin I always secretly hope for twins! (double the kids, half the pregnancies/labour! bargain!)

Twins, wow thats great :) good luck and hope everything goes smoothly and stress free for you from here on.... I just wanted to add my experience. I had a light bleed early on from about 6 weeks and was so scared i'd lose the baby. like yours it was a dark red which turned to a browny colour and it turned out to be an implantation bleed, that kind of colouring shows its old blood too. I panicked so much but it turned out to be nothing :) xx
