Have been using a moisture cream on my face without realising that it contains retinyl palmitate in it (vitamin A). Have been told by some people that I won't have absorbed enough to harm the baby and that it is nowhere near as potent as retinol but am still extremely worried!

The international Recommended Daily Intake of Vitamin A (Retinol) of which Retinyl Palmitate is a relation in 5000 IU/day. If the quantity is less than this in a typical application of your make-up (and I am pretty certain that it would be no-where near this) then you are fine.

By the way IU is international units. If it is not evident from the labelling you could email the manufacturer to clarify the point.

Whilst nobody will ever do a clinical trial of cosmetics to prove safety in pregnany (for obvious ethical reasons) it is seemingly pretty widely accepted that there is no major health concern in this regard.

BTW that was Twiga's DH posting! (Twiga doesn't even know what retinol is!)

Thanks Twiga - the moisturizer just lists it as an ingredient and dosen't state the quantity.

used to sell creams containing retinol. the brand i sold was low level so was ok for pregnancy. you could always contact the manufacturer.. i personally wouldn't use it in general. an expert told me it thins your skin to get rid of the wrinkles, so by time you reach old age you will be transparent!!!! vit c helps boost collagen production so may be worth trying that!

Its true, I had to ask what retinol was... Also DH is doing the typing as I still can't type and breastfeed at the same time! Hope that your pregnancy continues to go well, motherhood is one long worry, so this is just the start.

Do you think I will have done any harm to the baby by using it. Am 20+4 and have been using this cream for ages!

doubt it very much. i never used to sell it cos i thought it was minging old stuff that smelt of grannies. would only use if you are 35+ but, vit c is much nicer

Twisty, meant to say that although as a mum you'll worry about many a thing, it's also great - you'll be fine !

Twisty, please calm down- you seem to be worrying about everything. - most things in pregnancy are fine in normal doses - things only get dangerous if you start ingesting them in vast quantities. Your baby is most likely to be fine - is something is going to go wrong, it is highly unlikely to be caused by anything you have eaten or put on your skin.
