Pre-eclampsia. Has anyone had it?

I have another thread going on this but just wanted to cast around further for info.

My SIL, who's staying the night, is 33 weeks pg and very nervous about the birth because her mum died in childbirth of PE. The baby died too.

How can I reassure her that it's very unlikely to happen?
What should she look for?
What would the hospital do if they thought she was at risk?

TIA.

How is your SIL getting on Spidermama?

spidermama · 06/03/2006 21:11

She's says she's much calmer about the whole thing now VVV thanks. I haven't seen her for a while but she's coming down for a visit next week and she's due at the begining of April.

Just the same as everyone has said - she should let the midwives etc know that she's worried and why. I think they would be very insensitive not to take her concerns seriously.

I had P/E relatively late on with first pregnancy - very scary but it was well handled. Havign said that I had GD with second plus P/E symptoms and wasn't taken seriously which freaked me out given my history - so I know how scary the whole thing can be.

if your SIL is worried can she nip into the chemists and have extra BP readings when she feels the need between appointments? A lot of chemists round here do it for free, is there somewhere near her that would do the same? Otherwise, keep all appointments with m/w and extra appointments if she is at all worried. Hoping all is well.

Oh excellent. Have you pointed her in the direction of MN at all?

had Pre eclampsia with my first... my skin was that water logged with oedema that it leaked from my legs and i had a pouch of it hang off the bottom of my stomache which leaked constantly... shoe size increased from a size 6 to wearing my dads slippers which were a 10 and still left huge marks on my feet for hours after... The hospital said my Bp wasn't that high and left me to go over due despite migraines and protein in my urine and total body oedema.... my G.P kept sending me into hospital as the community midwife said it was too dangerous to look after me and the hospital would send me home ... ended in a crash section as baby got stuck and her heart beat disappeared along with mine! Second baby different hospital, planned c-section and a consultant who couldn't believe what he was reading when he requested my notes... now its third baby and the same hospital as no.2 with the same consultant booked for c-section no 3.

I've been volunteeri nng with a charity supporting pet mums for 6 years now, and I have come across 2 famillies who have lost mums from this, one not from UK. So from that angle the chances are very low indeed I would say. I wouldn't say that lost babies is o rare unfortunately, specifically because pet can (rarely) strike very early and / or suddenly.

As well as the famed symptoms flashing light (or any visual disturbance), abdominal pain, oedema I would also recommend to be aware of a flu-ey feeling, that was the first sign for me and a lot of women I talk to.

HTH (CAT me if you need to)
