4D scan at 29 weeks - is it worth it?

I am booked for a private 4D scan on Saturday.

I had an NHS growth scan yesterday (at 29 weeks) and it was difficult to get the head measurement as her head was too low in my pelvis and she wouldn't move. Also, because the baby was now so big you saw her in bits rather than the whole baby as in at the 20 week scan. I am now thinking that it may be a bit of a waste of money paying for a 4D scan. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thank you in advance.

I'm also keen to hear people's thoughts on this

I am off for a 4d scan today and am 28 weeks. I will report back!

I had one at 31 weeks with my daughter. I enjoyed it as there wasn't the anxiety type feeling that you get with the anomaly 20 week scan. I only got a glimpse of her face though as she had her hands covering her face all the time.

I could check that she was definitely a girl and I also wanted to check her face in case she had a cleft lip/palate as it runs in the family (so that we could be prepared if so).

We had a DVD of her and I've put that in her 'keepsake' bag so that she can look at it in the future.

I'm pregnant again and may have another one around the same time.

I'd say you are still in the ideal window for 4d. You don't see the whole baby on the screen at once but you should get lovely face pictures if the baby is cooperative and facing the right way. I had mine at 25 weeks and it was lovely. And now he is born, he really does look like he did in the picture!

DS looked nothing like the scan, which is a good job as the scan made him look like the love child of Mr Burns from the Simpsons and Mrs Thatcher's Spitting Image puppet Grin

So, yeah, I had one for DS but not bothering this time, which I feel an incy bit bad about as DC2 wont get the DVD of them in the womb, but no medical reason and dont want to spend the £150 (live overseas- expensive).

I had mine yesterday and really enjoyed it :) baby was very co-operative and it was lovely to see it stretching and yawning :) You don't see the whole baby on the screen - you have a quick look around and then they focus mostly on the face. I am pleased we had it done xx

Thank for all your replies. Decide to cancel in the end - mostly because she definitely seems to wants her head to be stuck deep in the pelvis (where it can't be scanned) and I don't want to risk spending the money and then not being able to see anything. I am hoping that I don't regret it later on!

When I had one with dd, 4 years ago, I went at the last possible time think its about 34 weeks? Tgat way she'd get a bit of meat on her and you could see what she was going to look like. I'd had friends who had done it really early and it didn't really look like their baby iyswim

Can I ask a really stupid question- what is a 4D scan and how is it different to a 3D one? What is the forth dimension?

McKayz · 25/05/2012 17:53

I had a 4D scan at 29 weeks and it was brilliant. All they ask is that you have a fairly full bladder as it pushes the head out of the pelvis.

I know you've cancelled now but the company I used will re scan you if they can't get good enough pictures.

I had my 4d at 29 weeks - totally amazing and worth every single penny and pound! It's nothing like the regular scan if I had the money I would have had a 4d every few days Smile my bubba (now 5 weeks) is really expressive and was pulling some crazy faces during the scan - some freaked me out as I did wonder what the hell he was going to look like (he's beautiful). It doesn't ruin the suprise about what ur little one will look like - although now some faces Noah pulls are the same as on the scan which always makes me giggle.
It's a fantastic experience and if you can afford to do it then 1 million percent do you'l love it Grin

Ooopps just seen that you canceled it Sad that a shame about the head position. At this stage though thy do pop in and out the pelvis so maybe re book it u find he/she's out again. Also most places re scan if they can't get photos of the face Smile

I had one at 31 weeks cos i wanted to know what we were having and they couldnt tell us at 20weeks. Where i had it done they dont recommend them beyond 32 weeks cos vaby can be in an awkward position. But i had plenty of Sprite before hand to get them wriggling n it Was FANTASTIC. They start in 2d n pick a section to look at then make it 3d/4d. Dh thought it was going to be a waste of money and not go Blush but even he was impressed. It was all so clear. And now dd is here you can actually see how much she looks like the scan pics Smile

I had mine at 26+5 for this exact reason there still small enough then to move about alot if in a funny position, we ended up with some v clear photos so v pleased.

I had a 4d scan and it was absolutely fantastic. So worth it. The DVD was just amazing. You could see her sucking her arm and poking her tongue out. The scan photos look exactly like her newborn photos, I know they should but it still amazed me! I heard a coffee and a big slice of chocolate cake before is good for an active baby!
