I'm 15 weeks so the sickness has mostly passed but I still can't brush my teeth without gagging, wretching and occasionally vommitting into the sink Angry

Yeah I've had this, planning to swap to an aloe Vera toothpaste which doesn't taste so strong. Very regular spitting or letting it drip out as you brush seems to help.

Bear1984 · 23/05/2012 20:14

I'm also like that and I'm 19 weeks. It's driving me mad. I try and stand up as straight as I can which sometimes helps. Or I like to think it does lol.

gardenpixies32 · 23/05/2012 20:27

Same here. Is horrid. I brush as quickly as possible to get it over with. Hope it ends soon.

blacktreaclecat · 23/05/2012 20:30

Yes and I'm a dentist. It is torture!
At 32w I brushed a bit too long and made myself sick. The vomiting was so violent I gave myself valsalva retinopathy (burst blood vessel in eye). Went blind in right eye, had to have laser treatment. A lot better but still not 100%. watch that vomiting it is dangerous

nenehooo · 23/05/2012 20:32

Electric toothbrush - smaller head! Or I try to breathe through my mouth... That helps me. Horrible though - and hate to say this but it's still happening at 19 weeks for me Sad

smornintime · 23/05/2012 20:36

I had this and also had trouble taking vitamins. Can your gag reflex be more sensitive or something?
Pleased to say it passed though - no bother any more so hang in there!

Fishandjam · 23/05/2012 21:04

Ooh yes, I have this problem (and I'm 34+3). Especially brushing my back teeth or my tongue. I'm relying on mouthwash to stop any horrid breath!

I had it with DC1 (currently PG with DC2) and it passed off PDQ after delivery.

SwissArmyWife · 23/05/2012 21:44

Yes, I get this too, it's horrible. Holding my breath when I get to the back teeth and tongue usually works!

Alligatorpie · 23/05/2012 22:29

Brushing was ok, but flossing was impossible! I was constantly throwing up! It did pass, can't remember when though.

Daisybell1 · 23/05/2012 22:30

I have this normally ie when not pregnant. I use arm and hammer toothpaste as there is something in either the sorbitol or sodium laureth sulphate in Colgate etc which makes my throat fur up and makes me sick. I also have to stand upright with my head level to get through.

Yes, I have been sick on dentists Blush

Springforward · 23/05/2012 22:34

Oh god yes, it was bloody awful! I could just about bear it with an electric toothbrush (small head, less wobbling about) and the tiniest speck of a non-mint toothpaste. Even then I'd often vomit, then have to start all over again.

Even now I have an aversion to mint . I stick to bicarb-y tasting toothpastes.

I had a dental check up during pregnancy which didn't go terribly well Blush. Luckily my dentist was lovely about it.

trixymalixy · 23/05/2012 22:35

Yep, the only times I was sick when pregnant were immediately after brushing my teeth.

blacktreaclecat · 23/05/2012 22:45

Glad no one was sick on me when working (mat leave now). I would have vomited back!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 23/05/2012 22:54

Bleurgh! My almost puking lasted a couple of days after giving birth too... Nothing helped, the only improvement was that instead of being actually sick, I was almost sick... I used DDs not minty toothpaste too with some success.

melliebobs · 24/05/2012 10:09

I remember bulk buying baby bubblegum & strawberry flavour toothpaste when I was pg. couldn't stomach it otherwise

Spice17 · 24/05/2012 10:56

Yep, awful till I was about 16 weeks. Would gag and sick up my drink a lot while cleaning my teeth in the morning (sorry if TMI) kind of got used to it.

I found cleaning my teeth with my head forward/down helped a bit, not as much froth at the back of my mouth.

Mostly passed now but writing this making me feel v nauseous again! :)

sammyleh · 24/05/2012 11:10

Spice17 Totally agree, I tip my head forward to avoid anything going down my throat and just let it all fall out. I use and electric toothbrush too to get it over with quickly, and if i miss anything through boaking i just swill some Corsodyl mouthwash round there to kill everything :)

wkmmum · 24/05/2012 18:36

I'm having a nightmare with brushing my teeth. Can normally do teeth at the front but there's just no way I can get anywhere near the back of my mouth without being really sick. Have been using mouthwash as well but am actually starting to get toothache (am 14 wks and have been this way since about 5 wks). No point going to the dentist at the mo though cos there's no way they could get near the back of my mouth either without me being sick.

Just hoping the sickness eases off soon but as I had it for 9 months with my son I don't have a great track record! xx

ZumBie · 25/02/2020 15:45

Please be careful, as aloe vera is very dangerous to pregnant or parents who are trying. As it induces menstruation xx

Jg93x · 25/02/2020 16:41

Exactly the same, was literally just about to post a thread on the same thing! Just managed to brush mine successfully and properly for the first time in 3 days 🤢 I feel so disgusting

Amber54 · 28/06/2020 23:20

I’m so glad I found this thread. Only 12 weeks pregnant and I’m finding it almost impossible to take my vitamins or brush my teeth without gagging and almost vomiting! I’m going to try some of your suggestions like a smaller toothbrush and maybe children’s toothpaste so it’s less strong. Thank you and fingers crossed it passes for all of us soon.

Umberta · 29/06/2020 07:28

I know this is a really old thread but fir anyone reading it now - I had this so bad and the thing that worked was using toothpaste tablets rather than toothpaste, like they do at Lush. Like a PP said, it's bicarby rather than minty. Made me feel less sick and I didn't need to fully rinse after cos that bicarby taste actually helped ward off the nausea for an hour or so.
